Design Dilemma Fireplaces

Order for installing fireplace tile, TV and mantle?

We are installing marble mosaic tile from floor to ceiling around fireplace, adding a rustic wooden mantle and mounting a TV above both. My question is do we install tile first then mount both on top OR install mantle, TV mount and then tile around both? Thank you!

Hi , if you have services for tv ready, then tiling first would save you cutting around mantle and disconnecting tv etc ,therefore you should be able to do it quicker and with neater finish

Hi Malia. I think it depends on if the area above the fireplace is already wired for the TV/Cable. If not, you need to get the electrician in there first. Then the tile, then the mantle, then mount/hook up the television.

Remove the Cedar Panelling from where you want the fireplace to go, I presume it's brick or blockwork behind it. Build a new Fireplace tied in to the original wall and go straight out the roof. Take advice from a builder obviously. I personally would not put the T.V above the Fireplace as it could be affected by heat, plus, the fireplace is supposed to be the centre piece and focal point, not the T.V. You could build low units under the cedar panelling and place the t.v to the side on one of those. Then remove the Wood burner giving you extra floor space and one easier to furnish around.

It's a shame the poor old thing has got damaged. I see the tiles must have been painted at some point on the original fireplace, as they were damaged and filled badly. Also, a shame that the bottom left of the fire surround was damaged in the demolition process, builders are right clumsy 'bugg****' sometimes. However, that part is at least not too difficult to fix. I think it would be a real shame to cut the surround in half and only keep the bottom. Keep it intact and renovate it would be the way i'd go. You'll need to change the tiled insert, so go with whatever you like, it's keeping the mantle intact that's more important. I'm presumng the original tiles were green or brown, although i've seen some nice blues ? You can make the hearth out of pretty much whatever you like, lots were slate, lots were tile. You can make the surround and hearth match or contrast up to to you. Going for an eclectic mix and match style is good these days too.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate you taking the time to feedback and for providing the mock up to show how this would work. I like the idea of the mustard wall...I have bold mustard and cream geometric curtains to blend with cushions so will give some thought on colour balance. I definitely agree that some more green accents are needed. Not even thought of turquoise! I'm dreding picking a rug for the room that blends with the bold soft furnishings! Will play around with mirror sizes so thanks for your advice on that. The stags head works well I think. I've tried a large A0 world map picture to right of the fireplace as its the larger wall and it didn't look right (too big) so if I went for art I've no idea what would look right or what size....the small wall to the left of the fireplace runs to the edge of a large bay window and sits behind the tv so not sure what to do there.if anything? I've ordered a new slimline hairpin leg wood tv unit which blends better with the room than the existing ugly one..I hope!

Thanks all! I really like the Serif, but I'm just not sure our living room allows for it. In addition, kids may be on the horizon so I think fear also plays a part! @Sarah U-S, thanks for the comment regarding the cable. I just see a video actually where the installer ran it behind a stud wall - however recommended not doing so for brick (our fireplace is plastered brick). That being said, we were thinking of doing something like the photo below, with cabinets built into the alcoves and perhaps even across the front of the chimney breast. Our thinking is that if the cupboards in front are kept very narrow it will not take too much space and we might be able to use the chimney opening to increase the depth a little. In this 'solution', we;d put The Frame sitting just above the cabinet at a sensible height, then pictures above say (as per @minnie101 's comment). The cable would presumably be able to run just a very short distance down into the cabinet, which wouldn't be so bad? Might even be able to hide it with a tiny ornament/plant in front...?

I wouldn't suggest both a mantle and TV. if a mantle is there, you'll need the TV to be higher up - which is very bad for the neck.
