entrance hallway

I live in a townhouse and the entrance hallway is quite narrow and dark. What kind of wallpaper would make this feel open and bigger? Thanks

Generally larger patterns make a small space seem bigger. You can probably trick the eye into thinking the space is wider with mirrors and the floor is bigger by adding a striped rug (widthways stripes). Some people also paint ceilings and coving in the same colour as the walls to blur corners, again in order to make it feel bigger

Hi Jit,

Sometimes its not worth the fight. You could just embrace the dark side!

Paint it dark and then brighten it up with artificial lighting.

Are you able to offer some context to what you are hoping to achieve? Do you have an existing style or theme present in the house that you would want to continue into the hallway? Photos are always a good thing to include as it allows people to see how narrow / open and how dark / light the space is and what options you have (it looks a similar layout to an apartment my brother had a few years back, if it’s similar then it’s going to be narrow and fairly dark, so I’d advise stuff that’s light and airy or even just keep the walls blank as too much clutter on them will draw the space in even further).

Thanks Victoria and 1shanson - I love both those ideas! Shame I don't drink or have a dog lol but I love creative ideas for using up otherwise redundant bits of space. I think I'll have to do as minnie101 suggested and leave it open, and secretly mourn the loss of my reading nook ; ) I was thinking of putting a console table and mirror under the stairs though? As the big wall next to the front door has the kitchen door opening out onto it. Loads of light there luckily as the kitchen and lounge doors are part glazed, and the hallway has a double/full? height ceiling that goes up to the roof beam, with some velux up there too.

Thank you everyone for the thoughts so far! Totally agree on the radiator cover - I've been trying to find something nice and slim so it doesn't block the door too much... and, as you can see, we are already struggling to find a door mat that will fit in the space (very restricted on materials as rubber will mark the fingerblock and anything non-grip is too slippery). Here's a slightly different view to show why I didn't put a mirror over the radiator... We could move the light switch, but need to keep our costs down where possible. Putting a mirror above the switch is too high (I think?). The random bits of art are to hide holes in the wall that I've not filled yet. :-D

Guys, I need more advice! 😕 I had planned on using wall panelling on the right hand side of my stairs, but I have pulled off a piece of wood that ran the length of the stairs and it's a bit of a mess underneath. I'm now thinking the normal batten style panelling is out of the question as I'm not going to get a straight wall once I've tarted up what's underneath where the wood was. Anybody got any ideas on how I can design this part of the stairs now? I believe the wood was placed there to cover where a previous handrail had been. It's quite low down tho, so must have been placed there by a fairly small person! I like the idea of tongue and groove panelling to basically cover the detritus that's been left, but I've no idea how to work out the angle to cut it to the correct size all the way up the stairs. So thinking of maybe just replacing the wood that was there with a fresh piece, maybe with a dado on top. Oh I don't know, help! Plans have been kiboshed! 🙈

Thank you guys, 2 very different options, both really useful. I think my mistake was mixing the dark and the light, making it all look a bit mish-mash 😊

I think simplicity is the key. Keep the area clutter free and put down a patterned floor (vinyl is fine). That’s what I would do.
