Elevated house - How to improve facade of detached 70's house?
Comments (22)I rather like your facade. I would think twice about painting the brickwork, as this would be a maintenance headache, but cleaning it would brighten it up. Otherwise stucco and paint the front ( brickwork) only? i would clad your existing canopy in lead, but leep the existing shape. Is the tarmac yours? If you could change this to something lighter and softer, this would have a really big impact. Clad the stairs in slate or indian sandstone, get rid of the block screen and replace with glass, ( marine grade stainless steel fittings and door furniture) black iron railing for the steps....See MoreMy raised terrace or balcony dilemma. Comments (42)Hi original poster! I know it’s 7 years since you asked this but would love to know what you did. We are not in a similar position with a similar looking house at the back but even steeper. I know that a full extension and lowering the internal floors would be ideal but we can’t afford that and need a 5-7 year fix. Please let us know what you decided and why ☺️...See MoreBuilding regs query - external balustrade
Comments (7)Hi, I have recently built a set of steps internally going from a kitchen down into a sun room area a drop of around 600 mm the ballustrading was how you have described you would like yours. This was built at the clients request and she has since had the building inspector round and he was not happy with the design because like you said it can be used as a ladder! My client also does not have any children 5 or under living or visiting her property. The conclusion from the building inspector was that she would have to cover the ballustrading to stop it being used as a ladder and so has been agreed that she will put Perspex or similar to keep the light flowing through so that she can get the work signed off. What the inspector is saying is that although she will not have children under 5 at her property if she ever sell,up and moves on then potentially a buyer with a child under 5 could move in so I guess they are trying to future proof everything. In the existing part of her house she has this design already which is why she wanted the horizontal ballustrading to match. Hope this helps....See MorePatio advice and ideas please
Comments (39)@rach1922 - you are quite right that people harvesting Indian sandstone were exploited, as well as the use of child labour. For this very reason many UK suppliers have installed their own staff in their own quarries to ensure this does not happen. So basically there are companies who have total control to ensure the Stone is ethically harvested, such as Marshall’s, London Stone etc. I used Global Stone who supply many builders merchants. Sadly, we as a society exploit many people in many countries so that we can enjoy cheap clothing etc. It’s a minefield....See MoreDaisy England
