Painting the fence white

Thinking of changing my front garden fence to white from brown.
Will this be difficult to keep it looking clean and white?
Can anyone recommend a THICK exterior wood paint? I am trying to cover up brown with the white.

Do you have a picture of the fence? It’s just that some types of fencing look wonderful in white, such as picket fencing. Once you paint fencing there will be on-going maintenance with repainting ever few years. And I’m sure white fencing will show the dirt more too.

White does look clean and fresh - however you will be re-painting every year, so think before actually committing. How about another colour?

Painting shed but not fence?

Hi all (sorry it wouldn't let me put my text in the original post!) I stupidly had a shed built before finishing the fence. I now intend to have a dividing fence erected on the left side of the garden with an extra bit sticking out to hide the bins. I had intended having the fence doubled so that I could paint my side, but that has become far too much of a faff now that the shed is in place. So I don't think I'll be able to paint my side of the fence. Neither next door neighbour wants their fence painted. However, I despise the colour of the shed!!!! Do you think I could leave the fence as-is but still paint/stain the shed? Maybe a dark brown or something? I'm going to change the slabs to grey and all our garden furniture is black, if that helps. It's previously been suggested (by you lovely people on here) that I could put a trellis or plants in front of the shed so I may do that at some stage. Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Is creosote still in production? Horrible stuff that stinks to high heaven for years. It was found to be carcinogenic so no one uses it anymore. It also causes breathing and stomach problems. I find “one coat” anything never truly replaces 2 coats. Lots of people on here have used Cuprinol Garden Shades with pretty good results. It’s on offer at Wickes and B&Q at the moment. Lovely colours too.

Depends where you live From your spelling of neighbor l presume you are US based? If so l don’t know their legal requirements. Here in the UK you are supposed to ask your neighbour if you want to paint the shared fence. Many don’t though.

Hi Damsel,

If you really want a white picket fence without the maintenance then you could consider upvc. They are zero maintenance and don't loose their colour. If they get dirty you can jet wash them.

The earlier ones weren't great but the newer ones its hard to tell their upvc.

If you prime it and paint it in a good quality exterior eggshell you should have no problems.
