How can I place furniture in this living room?

Hi I was wondering if I could get some help from all you clever people. We bought the house just in Feb. Not sure how to decorate this. I don't mind some minor renovation. Could you please give me some ideas?

Congratulations on your new home. Is this the estate agent photo or is this your furniture? It would be useful to know that to see what you are working with or whether you're purchasing new furniture. Also, how many people do you need seating for and do you intend to have a TV in the too?
It would also be useful to see a photo of the other end of the room and get an idea of what kind of colours and styles you like. Are you want to stay traditional or would you like to give the space a more contemporary look?

Thank you for your kind reply. This is from previous owner. We actually have nothing except a very old sofa and a pair of antique chairs. We are buying everything. I like mixing old and contemporary. But clean lines not too heavy. Thinking about adding a fire stove and getting rid of old one. Would like a TV but may hide it. We do prefer earthy, moody colours against white or light background. I would appreciate your thoughts.

One option enclosed. I think the photos in the post show furniture that is visually too big for this room. You could mark out furniture on the floor to get an idea of possible furniture positions and how big you can buy. Personally I think you will conclude you have room for one sofa no longer than 1.9m plus two chairs about 80x90cm each. If you choose lower and smaller arms than shown in the picture I think that will also help.

Liking the eclectic look! You do have a fair amount of furniture in the space, but I think with the look you’re going for it can work well, its just learning how to work with it. I don’t think it looks cluttered at all. At present, besides the furniture, the room is fairly simple and so your eyes are mostly drawn to all the furniture. I’m thinking if you add in some accessories here and there, it will help to create interest and change the focus. It’s a great way to tie everything in together without using an area rug. For example, adding some feature wall art above the sofa, whether that be one stand alone piece or a cluster of a few. Or how about adding a nice red throw over the sofa to tie in with the red chair? Adding plants/flowers on top of furniture are always great options as others have suggested. Your oval footstool is a lovely piece. Maybe you could add a tray on it with some accessories on? In terms of creating more storage, maybe you could have a think about open shelves and find some interesting ways to display your items. But the bookcase is lovely too! I suppose it really depends how much storage you need. They’re just some initial thoughts. I won’t be offended if you don’t like!

Hi Ru,

You have a blank canvas really. The best way to use this forum is to narrow down your decisions and then ask people to help you decide and give you ideas. You will get a lot more responses that way. For example post pictures of furniture you would like to keep and then pick a few colours that you would like on the walls, then ask people on here if it would work with the style you are aiming for.
