Design Dilemma Paint Gardens

should I paint the fence cream too? what do you think?

I have just painted the wall cream/off white to brighten up the corner of the decking area and match the cream parasol and cushions covers but now it makes the fence look odd. Do you think I should paint just those 2 fence panels too so they match? I don’t want to paint them and regret it. Please share your views...

I must admit I am scratching my head a bit on this one - the two slightly different shades of cream don't make it easy! If everything wasn't split new, I think I would be recommending changing the tiles. I'm not a fan of painting tiles either, but I am really at a loss as to what to suggest. A teal perhaps or verdigris, but I think whatever colour you pick, the tile/cabinet combination may still feel a little unbalanced. Might be worth thinking what you can do to mask the tiles with nicely coloured appliances, possibly an accessory rail, fruit bowl, plants/herbs etc.

thanks for your comments, I was worried about continuing the cream theme incase it doesn’t match well..the fence up is a cream with a yellow tinge to it so not the easiest to match. I was thinking about a dark brown colour like Cuprinol seasoned oak? Then I’m not sure what colour for the planters. does a darker fence make your garden look bigger or smaller? thanks, Louise

Lovely garden. I had a little garden a while back that had white painted walls and lightish grey painted fence with natural decking. The grey made the fence recess and the garden feel bigger and the white reflected light and made it feel bigger too. The planting looked amazing against both because the greens really pop against the homogenised background. So I think you should paint it too, but personally I'd find a complementary grey. Cream and grey are great together.

I think your view can take any paint colour 😍 There were articles on Houzz about black fencing, but I never saw a black one in real life. As I recall the article, the idea was that the black would disappear behind greenery. Meanwhile, in my garden I painted the fence with clay (or grey stone?) colour, and it looks good. Browny purple, as Colourhappy suggested, would look fabulous. I remember Luciana’s garden project, and browny purple in her garden looked beautiful. The only other thing to be conscious about would be to paint the fence first, then planting,not the other way round. You wouldn’t want to walk over the newly planter precious new plants while painting the fence. Also paint splatter might ruin or spoil the plants.
