Garden Design + Levelling / Sloping Garden Help

Hi, we've recently purchased a new build house and we're struggling a bit with how to configure the garden due to the way it slopes.

It's essentially just a 10m x 10m square at the moment with a few squares of pavement, and a slope from the top left towards the house and to the right fence. (see pics)

We're trying to work with the level as much as possible to reduce the cost of levelling, and we're thinking of a deck in the top right (sunspot), and a raised lawn in the top left, with some steps and sleeper beds / steps around the garden to support it. (see drawing)

Does anyone with any garden experience have any thoughts on how feasible something like this would be and how much it would roughly cost?

Or any alternative ideas for the garden? We have a dog so a lawn is essential, and a deck or patio in the top right is pretty much a given for us.

Any ideas/design tips would really be appreciated! We're looking for something quite modern, ideally with levels to create interest and reduce the levelling costs (if this even achieves that?)

Morning, Our sister company JML Contracts specialises in Gabion baskets and retaining walls. Are you in Scotland? I have spoken to the office manager who said if you PM me, I can let yo know a local company to you, if not.. To build retaining walls out of gabion baskets, they do need to be designed by a structural engineer, but they would do all of that for you. It does help, if you have photos, measurements and also a wee sketch of what you ideally would like it to look like when it is finished. Thank you people! For your replies. I never thought about speaking to the colleges. Good idea! I already plan to add height with a square chunky black pergola, I’ve walked down there today and thought why on earth am I hanging on to my greenhouse - I grow seedlings cucumbers and tomatoes, but it’s otherwise just a dumping ground. It would be the perfect spot for a sofa or swingseat with fire pit which would leave the lower patio area free for a table and pizza oven (one day in my dreams!) It isn’t a small space, but I would like quite a lot from it. Budget is non existent - we have done everything ourselves by hand so far...Which we have enjoyed luckily! Hubby needs a spot outside his shed to tinker with our bikes. I have my veggie patch already but obviously would like more.. love the greenhouse but a smaller one would suffice. Loved my swingseat and want another..kids have a huge paddling pool that kills the lawn every year! Sun rises in the front of the house and sets at the back, so the garden is southwest facing. The new patio area gets the sun from morning through till about 6pm. And then lightly again at 7.30pm (big trees in the way!) The patio by the house gets the sun from mid morning till 7pm in the summer (it goes down behind those huge trees). Photo is 7.30pm taken from by the house. You can see the wonderful trees by the river. It is wonderful down there (albeit pongy!) as we don’t hear the main road as much - just the birds and the ducks on the river at the bottom of our garden

Have you thought of gabions, provided you put the facing layer of something attractive that you like you can fill the back with all the old bricks and rubble (no soil) that would save on the amount of money you would have to spend on the facing and journeys to the tip to get rid of rubbish. If you wanted you could add a decking board, or anything you fancied on the top to use as seating this doesn't need to be the full width of the garden and is quite cheap to buy but do treat with preservative to give a long life, I definitely would put plants behind to stop people tripping over and falling on to the patio. It looks as though the area where your decking currently sits is level. You could move the decking to the top right of the image, and have part of it on stilts to make it level from the highest spot of the garden. And/or extend it out to the left so it in effect covers up your steep ditch (leaving space to access to the back gate). Leaving the kids the whole width to play on a flat area. I would plant something tall against the fence line for privacy, and between the decking and the flat piece of lawn for aesthetics. You could potentially store toys under the deck too. Obviously a lot of what you can do depends on what’s around you. Can’t see from the image. It wouldn’t be a cheap job. Especially if you use quality materials (though they have with a longer lifespan). Get your options priced up and prioritise the landscaping first. Expect a garden to be a long term project (5years plus) even with professional landscaping etc. Takes the pressure off, allows you to see how you will use the space and it takes time for things to grow!
