They are climbing roses. Other climbers you could consider: wysteria, grape vine, climbing hydrangea, plumbago....

Thanks so much everyone - this has been great. Sorry for the lack of response - been flat out!!!! It must be hard for you American guys to work on such old English designs.... The ideas have gradually culminated into what really would look good on the house. Ourfarmhouse - these are absolutely great ideas, and thanks Everything Beautiful for getting the jist and putting the ideas onto the house image - nothing like seeing an actual design on your own home. We've got an architech working on it, and he's keen on the iron-wrought idea... but we're not sure. Basically toss-up with this and Everything Beautiful's design (2 above). Going with a four-pannel door, but would like to incorporate some glass somewhere! Possibly a panel above with the house name engraved on it?? Victoria - absolutely right...! We don't need to sit outside with the weather.......... say no more! Just wanting something to cover yourself while you're unlocking the door. We've also done a tour of the local areas, and found a couple of porches - amazing what you find right on your doorstep! Will attach pics shortly...

Thanks, all of the above I reckon! Between B&C would definitely do well with arches and climbers, it could turn into more of a haven for the Robins to nest, and the rear of that garden already has climbers.... On the bend, I'm going to double secure it with a secondary gate and may pay to put up some "private land" signs to make it clear its not part of BT and someone owns it. BINS! We generate an enormous amount of recycling, and our 11yr old can make a mess with it to boot. The bins do go down the main driveway and I wont change that since its the best route, however that is all at the front entrance end of the house, rubbish going out via the living and office. I was thinking about putting a tidy bin enclosure next to the gate which is at the house end of the drive, across the way from the house. While the big pile of soil is out front (left by ex owner from digging garage foundations), the refuse ends up right outside my lovely new entrance in a mess. The only reason I considered the path for rubbish was convenience, regardless that it would still go all the way down the driveway once a week, as taking rubbish out would be right by the laundry/kitchen door because that is where the path is. Neighbour #3 are new, moved in yesterday. They have unruly bamboo up against their back wall. With that part of the path being say between wall and curb stone, which should keep it contained, I could suggest to them that we re-plant it in my path an free up the end of their garden and be able to see the nice wall they have. These would be far easier to remove then tree would be a long time down the line..... I just REALLY dont want to become responsible to have to go into BT with a hedge trimmer though.... Ive already got an ENORMOUS garden to maintain......hmmm

I agree climbers may well be the best way to go. The RHS has lots of suggestions. If it is a sunny site then Trachelospermum jasminoides is a great option. Don't be put off by the name it is widely available. It has evergreen shiny leaves that get a little red blush in the cold of the winter and in June/July it is covered with strongly scented Jasmine like star white flowers - stunning! Also consider using a trellis to screen the wall at the same time. Not an ulgy traditional square trellis, but one that is made up of horizontal slats - they look great and very chic. Finally I would caution against Bamboo - even the non spreading ones will get to a clump of 1m width in a few years. They also like a lot of water to look their best, and so whilst you do see them in pots, they always look a bit shabby under those conditions.

Hi Hannah. Couple of sketches for you. Didn’t put anything on the top half as thought you could have lots of options where to place outdoor furniture and so on. With the steps, assuming that you could cut into the retaining wall, I might do as half and half or personally I’d go for 1 third on top and 2thirds into bottom garden (if that makes sense). I made the steps really wide in one sketch as I think this gives a broader view from the patio doors looking down to the end of the garden. Thing to remember having the steps this way is that it will eat into the lawn space and like I said a big building job. Other than that borders will be good and there are plenty of plants for both sun and shade plus a couple of tall flowering shrubs might be nice for extra height. When making a border fork up the soil and add extra mulch and compost to give plants a better start. Since you’re facing south the bare cut conifers at the back will be mostly in shade so I think a large leaf ivy should do well. It grows quite vigorously tho so be aware that it needs trimming every now and then. One more thing, although I’m sure you’re aware of it, is that the garage looks like it has an asbestos roof and will need specialist removal. Anyway, hope this helps. Here’s sketch.
