How can I recreate this extractor chimney look?

I’ve looked everywhere and I just don’t understand how do people make these half-chimney extractors. Is it made of wood and then plaster board and plaster? If so then wouldn’t the fumes from cooking effect the paintwork?
Any tips please I’ll be grateful.

Hi Elaina,

Yes I would say they are made from wood, same as the cabinets. You could also make it out of a wood framed in plasterboard and some plaster coving. The extractor fan would go inside and has its own metal exhaust so doesn't effect whats around it.

Often they are painted MDF or you can buy kitchen cabinets/door material from your kitchen manufacturer and get it constructed.
Some top end kitchen manufacturers will make it for you

Hi @J Lo no we haven’t bothered (yet). Generally its been fine. There’s no escaping the fact the long feed does create a bit of unavoidable condensation but it’s nothing major and easily manageable with some workaround measures. I got some cooker hood filters and cut them to size to lay on top of the cooker hood to trap the grease and smells more. i also fold a piece of kitchen paper into a square and put that underneath the motor of the fan so if there are any drips through where the motor unit is screwed together (that is the main culprit!) its well absorbed. The filter lasts about 3 months before I change it. The kitchen paper I change every couple of weeks and just to stress its a tiny greasy drip each time that dries up. I just change it for cleanliness when I check it and wipe the side of the fans, as I would anyway even without that issue. The way I see it is it’s still a much better set up than relying on a recirculating hood that doesn’t take the smells or grease outside at all. So the very minor condensation issue is a small price to pay. I was a bit obsessed with it when I posted on here but don’t give it too much thought now… until you posted and reminded me haha! I would suggest though if you have the option you may as well do what you can now while the dirty work is going on for peace of mind. Whatever your builder says there will defnitely be a little condensation whatever the set up, unless you have a really powerful fan or the extra fan on the chimney - its just physics and gravity that can’t be avoided. Either way you want to get it sorted now in my view rather than later as you probably won’t get round to it, as has been the case with us. That said, like I say it’s not a major issue if you have the same results as us. So the sink and oven position are fixed- no problem. For me the things that stop this feeling industrial are the suburban elements such as the conventional sink with drainer, the drawer line cabinets, the open display unit, the hanging baskets of flowers and the chimney extractor. In my opinion a little exposed brick isn’t enough to pull this into an industrial look when there is so much conventional stuff. Personally I think you should be looking to add a chunky sink and taps. Build a chunky chimney to hide an extractor, choose cabinets that are random sizes and avoid having lots of matching cabinets. Consider non matching cabinets for the wall- personally I would go tall. And as far as decoration I think instead of flowers you should be thinking Iron furniture or clocks, antique mirror, tarnished brass, weather wood, reclaimed slate, anything vintage, etc, etc. Your visual doesn’t show lighting /. Consider the best way to do this and think Anglepoise lamps, wall hanging lanterns and oversized ceiling fixtures. I also think that if you want to go industrial you should cover up the floor and a click together floor or a vinyl are cost effective ways of doing this

Vent axia recommend that if your ducting runs into unheated roof voids there should be a condensation trap, bearing in mind you have warm moist air travelling upwards through a metal liner that may be closer to outside temperatures and at quite a distance I think that I'd recommend fitting a condensation trap to be on the safe side. Last thing you want is a call back from a customer who has water dripping from their extractor into their dinner. Its certainly a good idea to make use of the chimney for ducting.

I have pan drawers under our Bora extracting hob. They were adapted so the drawers are less deep, but are still 430mm front to back so can still get plenty of pans in them. With a Bora you have to buy their ducting and it's additional to the cost of the hob. Not sure about other brands. Remember you can have a recirculating one, doesn't have to be ducted. An additional wall mounted fan is a good idea as far as I understand - but think it depends on your space. I'm with you on having the hob in the middle - it would annoy me not to have a good amount of space either side. Sorry if repeating what's already been said as haven't had time to read the other replies.

Thank you both for your replies. Do you know If it needs to be painted in a special paint, so it doesn’t come off with cooking fumes?

I've done similar before and we made a frame up and cladded it with plasterboard and plaster, then for the bottom section we had some panel approx 200mm tall, painted the same as the kitchen and wrapped this round the bottom of the plastered boxing but a bit lower then the boxing as we fitted a painted panel into the recess which has a section cut out to fit the canopy extractor. Then above the 200mm panel we had some painted cornice (as used on top of the wall units) which was mitred around and sat on top of the 200mm tall panel, then some more panel was used to make the shelf that sat on top of the cornice.

The plastered section is painted in a quality emulsion and the fancy bits and the panel for the extractor i had painted by my door supplier so it could cope with any heat and steam. The extractor is ducted outside or out through a vent.

I got a local joiner to make one for us. He is also a firefighter! I think he used MDF and not plasterboard.
Painter and decorator then used the same paint as the rest of the kitchen I dont think it needed to be specific.
