Planting advice for an old tin bath
Hi, I’ve recently acquired a gorgeous old tin bath and was looking for planting suggestions. It’s 85cm long by 65cm wide but only 35cm deep. I’m looking for a long term scheme and not annual bedding. I love roses and hydrangeas and have several in pots - but all are deeper than this. I like typical cottage garden colours - pinks, purples and whites. I was looking at the Flower Carpet Rose as it says it is happy in a wide container, but not sure if the depth is still too shallow? Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks.

3 years agoThat tub is just my kind of thing! I have two in my garden. One has a Camellia in it and the other smaller one has a hardy fuchsia in it. The fuchsia looks a bit lonely so I could do with a few more in it! Roses tend to have very long tap roots so need a deeper pot maybe? I think those tubs look best full of frothy perennials in them rather than shrubs, although ground covering roses such as The Fairy or Laura Ashley look good if their roots aren’t too deep.

Bathroom tile & colour advice
Comments (27)Hi the floor tiles we are using are from tops tiles , I can't see them on their website but they have them in their shop . They are dark grey/ black 30x60 and are Matt but in certain lights have a very tiny sparkle . Not the ones with big sparkly bits and that are shiny . If I go in again I will find out the name . Comments (17)Suspect the space above sink has at least 30cm in width? I'd get a mirror cabinet. I know it's not great as its not centred but for me, I like the idea of having my daily essentials stored above the sink inside a mirror cabinet. Otherwise, try three white shelves. They will look great with the blue wall. An alternative is wall art. Make sure you don't get canvas as the bathroom is meant to get steamy during its lifetime. You can even get three small irregular shaped mirrors to offset the 'frames'/vertical alignment with the sink. Trip to IKEA (mirrors) or the Bathstore (look up the myplan wall cabinets) I'd say. Comments (12)Julie have a look on YouTube on how to lay turf. There are some great tutorials on there. Soil needs to be raked to a fine tilth then trodden down before the turf is laid. Seed is much cheaper but I found it unsatisfactory as it takes ages to fill out and kiddies and dogs need to keep off it until it’s established, so turf would be quicker and easier. It would be easier to get a gardener to lay the turf, but of course that will cost more. Don’t put pressure on yourself, turf can be laid ideally all through the spring, so April and May would be ideal, but summer is okay as long as you water it when dry....See Moregarden design advice for my edible/wildlife friendly front yard
Comments (14)Rachel and Carolina, thank you both so much for taking some of your time to think and design those sketches, it has really helped me in a stage I was blocked in my project. I now can keep on moving forward, that's so great. Carolina, I like your designs and they are actually similar to the sketches I was doing before I imported the soil in the garden but I think at this stage, following the natural curves of the garden will be much easier for me. I really like a lot of ideas you emitted. I will indeed add a birdbath somewhere and possibly a mini pond :-D Rachel, you just put into words and sketch a vague idea that I had but that I didn't know how to formulate! you basically read my mind. yes, I noticed there was some natural lines, and I wanted something more in curves but I didn't know how. your design makes it all look possible and realistic. to answer your questions, the round things are wine bottles. I was thinking of adding more wine bottles for edging but they might be a bit too short for high enough raised beds. I'll have to think about it... yes, the silver planter is a dolly tub. I was thinking of planting a clematis in it and some colourful flowers at the base of the clematis. 3 years agoNo that image is not mine, sadly. Mine has one little, only just emerging, fuchsia in it! I need to plant more in it! I have the Laura Ashley ground cover rose in the ground but it’s still only in bud so not much to see except a load of leaves, the flowers are similar to the second pic. The last picture is Pink The Fairy. The original The Fairy is a pale pink but still very pretty. Here’s my Laura Ashley rose in bud waiting to open!
