Shallow/wide garden

Now the days of a football being kicked around are gone, I’d like to give my garden more character and create more ‘depth’. From the patio and kitchen worktop/sink window, my eye is drawn to the corner pictured. Am thinking of a simple pergola, but how best to create the best illusion of depth? What’s the best position? Any planting ideas? We have fabulous views out the back, but planted the hedge to give us privacy from the track behind our garden. Any suggestions welcome!
