Neighbour no-nos
Comments (8)I live one house away from a corner lot, so part of my back yard lines up with a home on a different street--but I have the larger yard, so majority of their back yard ends against my property. The rear of my yard backs up to a ridge that is littered with trees and ivy. When we do yard work, we tend to toss our limbs in that area against our property line and the ridge, but we keep it in our property. Our side neighbor whom we have never spoken to planted some trees dangerously close to the property line (I say dangerously because we are planning to erect a fence soon and they are right along the line). All the dirt they dug up was wheelbarrowed to the ridge where they dumped it...but it's in our property. I didn't care enough to vocalize it because it's really not MUCH dirt and that area of our property isn't exactly showroom ready....but when the brushline gets hauled off and fence goes up, their trees are going down....See MoreGarden design help please - greenhouse and children's play area
Comments (2)@lisamarie1000 it looks like you've got quite a blank canvas to work with there but as well as giving lots of opportunities it can also be quite daunting if you don't know where to start. As a starting point I would look at where the sun falls in the garden as this can be important for growing vegetables and the greenhouse which need to be in as much sun as possible. Draw a plan to scale of the garden and use cut out shapes to represent the different areas (growing area, play area, sitting area etc.). You can place these on the plan and move them around until you get a layout that you are happy with. The size of the shapes needs to be big enough to represent what their use is. You can also base this on the dimensions of the house such as location of windows and doors. Try to avoid pushing everything to the edges as this can just draw attention to the boundaries and make the space feel small. Think about how you would move through the garden to get to the different areas. If you are going to have a path through, it will be more interesting if this isn't just a straight line down the middle. By making the route through have changes in direction you can add focal points (such as the apple tree) and make the garden seem bigger. If space is tight consider growing vegetables mixed in with ornamental plants so that the garden doesn't look like an allotment. Finally think about using screening with tall plants or trellis at various points so that you don't see the whole garden at once. This can also make the garden seem more interesting and enticing....See MoreKitchen lean to extension, interior walls removed, outside WC convert
Comments (43)I can imagine you must be demoralised because you can’t afford what you were dreaming of but I have got to say I get excited about this kind of house, it’s amazing high ceilings and finding one at an end so the garden is not shaded is brilliant. I think you could have a beautiful space if you put bifold doors between the kitchen and the lean to, raise the floor in the lean to so it’s the same height as the kitchen and have the same flooring for a feeling of continuity. The bifolds satisfy building regs as you don’t need to rebuild the lean to, you have a dining space for all but the coldest days and when it is cold you just close the bifold doors....See MoreShould I replace part of front hedge with fence + tree?
Comments (4)Hi there, I would try to keep the hedge as best as I can. Since it is part of a long run of hedges, it might be an established habitat for birds, and I think that we should be really mindfull when doing things like this and only do it if really necessary. I would try to find somewhere else in your garden (obviously out of the way of the cars rout) to introduce a planting bed and perhaps some small trees or shrubs and herbaceous perennials. If you would like professional help with that, please have a look at my website. I provide a range of online garden design services (face to face in richmond upon thames) and would love to help you with this project. I could help you with the layout and the plant selection to make sure it matches your garden conditions and thrives. www.therootedconceptgardendesign.co.uk Please get in touch if interrsted.
