north facing front garden advice

Hello! I am a complete gardening novice but hoping to learn. Would love your advice and ideas of what I could do with the flower beds next to the house.

I think the ivy should stay (kept trim under window) as it leaves horrible tendril marks. But the bottom of the ivy is quite rooty and covered by some other shub for the time being. Any other recommendation greatly appreciated

Hi. To be honest I’d remove the grass altogether so you’d have lots more room for plants. However does your home have a covenant restricting what can be done to the front? Some housing estates have a rule where front gardens need to keep open sight lines, might be worth checking deeds or local council.

If you can remove some or all of the grass I think 2 or 3 Hydrangea Annabelle would look lovely. Under planted with a hardy geranium like geranium Rozanne and maybe a few lime coloured evergreen ornamental grasses. All easy to look after with a trim/prune once a year. If you do decide to plant any thing new then don’t plant too close to the wall. Hydrangeas and other shrubs will appreciate more space for their roots. I like the ivy and I think you’ve got it well in check 😊.

Loving Rachel’s suggestions. I removed the grass on my tiny front garden and planted the area In a variety of shrubs and flowers. Best thing I ever did and no more carting the mower through the house!

Start with your budget, what is it? Make a plan, gardening is not an overnight transformation, it takes time but that for many of us is the sheer joy of it. A year of all around plant interest is possible in time. I would spend my budget on getting the basics in place, so decide what you want e.g. do you want a patio and large beds and no grass, or some grass? If your local college has an agricultural course running they might be willing to help you as the students would learn a lot here, maybe ask? What is your soil type e.g. is it heavy clay or sandy? Is it acidic, alkaline or neutral, these facts are deciding factors on whether or not plants will thrive. Look at what plants are thriving in your local area that is a good guide to your soil, e.g. if there are lots of rhododendrons thriving near by then the soil will be acidic. If it were me, I would get it all dug up, lay a patio, add large beds (put in lots of fine bark compost), and no grass, just gravel. Work with your site, right plant right place is a mantra for a very good reason (!), there is no point planting sun loving plants if you get little sun so do your research on plants that thrive in shade, one good website is Plantsforshade. I would add lots of trellis to grow climbers as they will give you height and trick the eye into making your garden appear bigger, climbing hydrangeas, star jasmine ( for scent) some roses but choose carefully. Now draw up a year's plan so you can start planting for all year round colour, take your time and it's not daunting. Add attractive tubs (often on sale on our local Facebook!) and and plant appropriate annuals, there is loads of advice on line. Best of luck.

With north facing rooms you have to accept they will never be light and cheerful so it is better to go for warmth of colour with layers of textiles to create an inviting space in which you feel coddled and comforted. Looking at your photos and where you are in your thinking I would use your favoured peachblossom but perhaps zone the dining area back wall and cupboards to the side with the slaked lime to keep the rear of the room lighter and aid the mirror. I notice there is an eating area in the kitchen so how often is the dining table used? If the room is primarily used for sitting then the table could be pushed back releasing more floor space. To tie the two ends of the room together recover the chair seats with a peach/blue/grey patterned linen and dress the table with a runner, decorative bowl or plant/flowers in the same palette. Even if you are not keen on pattern it does hide spills on dining chairs! The aim is to layer up the decoration using plains and patterns without confusing the eye. Your wonderful urn flanked by a pair of bowls or candles on a pale runner would work. The side window is crying out to be dressed and could have a roman blind set in the alcove or a flat pelmet of dramatic shape or proportions to match or complement the dining chair fabric or runner fabric. The window corner would benefit from a standard lamp, perhaps a multi bulb to avoid using the over head lights. If the table goes back slightly the sofa could move to in front of the garden doors with the mirrored console behind. It may be difficult to get power to here for lamps but it is possible to find battery operated ones although they are still very costly but there are realistic wax battery candles (some of which are on remote controls) that could go in a pair of glass storm lanterns to an extra glow to both the dinning and sitting areas. The wooden sideboard could then go on the right hand wall as you look at the garden with two small arm chairs flanking it to provide more seating when needed, another mirror above to catch the evening sun and either a pair of tall lamps or one huge one. The navy chair could be angled in the corner of the doors with the sheep to the window side. The tv console is a bit of a problem as the proportions are slightly out. Just pulling it out of the corner along the wall slightly with a turntable underneath the tv itself for angling may help. Alternatively could the console be used at the dead side or the sofa for books and cups etc? The tv could then go on a small round table in the corner. The space between the doors and sofa needs a large rug to define the space and minimise the wear to the carpet from garden traffic. A large square storage footstool would layer the space whilst giving extra storage. The finishing touches will be throws and cushions to complement the peachblossom walls and navy chair; a navy blue wool/mohair throw for the sofa mirroring colour and adding texture, with cushions in the dining chair fabric along with your velvet ones and one other texture or colour. If I was going to do just one thing I would replace the stepping stones with a decent sized path. I favour long narrow slabs embedded in gravel with an edging to contain the gravel. Or just butted and staggered slabs if you don’t mind the additional maintenance with a staggered edge against grass. Plants do a better job than fences in making boundaries disappear. Climbers won’t take up so much room. Evergreen climbers on the garden building will give all year round interest and soften the brick surface. It isn’t well known but the evergreen Euonymus fortunei will climb, if given a little help, if planted up against a wall. Slow to get going but will thrive in sun and shade and is as tough as old boots. Silver queen has green leaves edged with white which brightens a shady corner. You can grow other plants through it and in front of it. I think a pergola is preferable to an awning. The honeysuckle Lonicera hehryi is evergreen and will grow in sun and shade but I don’t believe it is scented. There are scented honeysuckles and roses that will be pleasant to sit under. A green roof controls the temperature in a building. Great to look at from upper windows but it can be pricy. Sedum is commonly used. You say you don’t want a patio at the rear of the house but I would at least consider a path along the wall outside the doors. Set it away from the house to make room for plants. Would you consider moving the shed to the rear fence? Whilst allowing for access you could plant a hedge in front and in front of that the reflective water feature already mentioned or just a reflective surface as a feature. It will throw light back into the garden and will give depth. An arbour with a bench might be nice here to enjoy the water.

Thank you for your suggestion regarding the house layout. We really like what you've done to maximise the space downstairs and to include our room requirements in your thinking. We love the utlity area, with an additional nooks for coats etc. and the sizeable pantry off the kitchen. Definitely a good idea to incude plumbing, where we play to put to palyroom because eventually we could see this turned into an additional bedroom for elderly relatives. The re-shuffle of the upstairs space is clever, to minimse cost e.g. with the en-suite bathroom for the master bedroom. I prefer what you've done with the two smaller rooms, by including a doormer whould make the space more useable...and one of the rooms could still become an office. Questions: - by installing roof lights in the downstairs extension, do you feel that would be sufficient light for the ktichen space? Very concious to not make the middle space of the downstairs too dark? Thanks again - blown away by what you've produced!
