hole in wall - is it an overflow?

This hole is where the en-suite bathroom is. I thought it may be an overflow but wouldn’t there usually be a pipe coming out of it? Perhaps it used to be an overflow but isn’t anymore, and I can fill it with expanding foam?

Is it possible that it’s no longer an overflow, do all bathrooms need one? I don’t want to fill it if it’s still required to be a hole there.

Fill it in. The house was probably built with a wc with an overflow but the bathroom has likely been replaced since and no longer needs it.

Thanks Jonathan. What’s the modern equivalent of an overflow pipe coming out the brickwork? I.e if this is now redundant what is likely in place to prevent flooding in the event of a drain blockage?

I agree with buzzmummy in that I don't think it would work so well with the picture rail… but would be OK with the coving (if it's fairly plain rather than ornate…?). I prefer the second picture she posted as personally I don't think the modern fire suits the mantel/surround in the first one. Our last house was a 1930s semi and it had coving and dado rail when we moved in. We removed the dado but left the coving. We took out the marble fireplace that was in there and had the square-ish hole in the chimney breast plastered neatly so it was just that - a hole in the wall (with chimney above for Father Christmas!). We put a granite tile in the bottom as a shelf just because we were doing the patio and it happened to fit, and then we had flowers or candles in it. We were getting around to putting a fire in and I was doing research just like you. Never did it before we moved in the end but after my research I was confident it would have looked nice. I do think a squarer shape is more in keeping with the traditional style, rather than the wide sort in the original picture you posted.

Thanks Jonathan, that is a good suggestion, this is the first time I've moved into a property where the living room has no carpets but laminated floor. Would a rug dampen the sound do you think, if it were the case? Sonia, you are right, the TV does feel loud, but I'm not sure whether they realise that! Sigh.

Hello Jamie, I'd recommend ivy, not a very fashionable, but will grow in full sun or full shade, is self clinging so need to tie in, fast growing and doesn't need pruning. If it gets out of control just cut it back. Try Hedera hibernica or Hedera helix 'White Wonder' for a variegated variety. Good Luck!

I think you'll have to remove the bath side panel and get to the seal thats on the overflow (pic 8 with the adjustable) and put some silicon on the seal so it seals the overflow to the back of the bath. Looking at the pic it does look like there's old silicon there which really could do with cleaning off. You can add more silicon to the seal on pic a or get a new seal, then whilst holding the overflow in position at the back of the bath in position you fix the front parts via the screw into the overflow.

An internal overflow allows the excess water to run straight down into the toilet bowl, which ensures you won't have a flood in your house.
