planting jasmine in garden

Was planning on planting a jasmine in a pot where this white pot is, attached to a trellis so it can climb and then move left/ right along the top.

However on second thoughts wondering if it would be better to remove the paving slab that is there and plant directly into the ground instead. Would it work, or would it look strange? Should I just stick to my plan of a 50cm pot?

Plants are always happier in the ground but some do cope well in pots. There are two types of Jasmine - common jasmine which is deciduous and very vigorous, and Star Jasmine which is evergreen but slower growing. Both need a sunny spot. Both have a wonderful scent. The Star Jasmine would cope in a pot for a few years and a 50cm pot is a good size so I think it will work. It’s latin name is Trachelospermum Jasminoides.

Thanks Sonia, yes we were thinking of star jasmine. Would it grow through the trellis to the side in a 50cm pot or would that hinder its ability to do so?

I would say some of the previous suggestions have been good - we had a similar problem in Oxfordshire. Heucheras are great, especially in a mixture of colors, try at least one red in the mix. A couple of dwarf conifers give good evergreen year round structure, which is so important, you want some some strong lines in a front border or it can look very bitty and insignificant. If things grow a bit above the wall, so much the better, as it will also soften the lines and it looks as if you could do with some height. Add a few fail safe plants clumping plants that will bring some color into the mix at different times of year - Japanese anenomies are great, white ones look modern, or go for pink. Schizostylis are fantastic, would never plan a garden without them. They come from Siberia so will survive come what may! Come in pinks or red and flower from late autumn through to spring, when no other color around, even in snow, you can also put them in pots. Crocosmia are pretty fails safe too and come in lots of colors. Yes, tuck some bulbs inbetween things and see what happens, don't forget these can also go in pots for seasonal color, you can even buy ready planted.

What we call valerian, centranthus rubra, would do well near the walls in sun, however it does get big roots eventually so I wouldn't grow it in the walls. Creeping campanulas would be nice down the walls, or creeping rosemary for a drier place, cerastium tomentosum (snow in summer), aubrieta, alyssum, various alpines.. persicarias work well in walls too, but it depends how much rain you get. These are for sun - Marina has given a good list for shade. And of course, see what everyone else is growing nearby.

Maybe some evergreen shrubs? They will give green colour all year round and pretty easy to look after. There are no plants that flower all year round, but if you choose spring and summer flowerers and some that flower in winter it will create changing seasonal interest. Easy evergreens are Fatsia japonica (Sam’s suggestion) - exotic looking but really tough Photinia Red Robin - glossy green leaves whose tips are bright red in the spring Viburnum tinus - pale pink flowers in winter Ceanothus - gorgeous blue flowers in spring. Camellia - pink, red or white flowers in spring. Need acid soil. Trachelospermum - climber with white fragrant flowers in summer, commonly called the Star Jasmine. Cistus - Small shrub with papery flowers in pink or white. Lavender - no explanation needed! You can then fill in the gaps with perennial flowers and feathery grasses. This type of planting is called Prairie Planting and is very popular at the moment and very easy to look after. There is a saying “Right Plant Right Place” so check whether plants you buy need sun or shade or a mixture. Putting a shade loving plant in the sun and it could shrivel and die. Better in the ground, as the pot will limit its size and you will constantly have to water in the summer. You could also plant a second one in the flower bed to the right - this will get your wall covered in half the time
