how to pretty, make the most of stream/drain running through garden

We have a stream/lincolnshire agricultural drain running through the middle of our property, steep banks are north and south facing and eroding in places. We want to make it look attractive and pretty perhaps increase the sound of the gently flowing water without obstructing the flow (don't want it to block up and cause flood!) even build a natural self flowing weir if possible! Have purchased some plants to try and help the soil in the meantime but would love ideas on how to secure plants into bank without causing a landslide!

Hi. This is a tricky one. I suppose you could try using a bulb planter to make holes for new plants. Or use netting of some sort to temporarily cover the bank and plant through that. What plants have you bought? Some fast growing ground cover will ensure the soil is less exposed to erosion and once plant roots are established this will help further.

Does the water rise in winter? This may effect what you can grow but I’m sure there are plenty of options. I’ve no idea if a weir would affect the water flow but I think a couple of largish stones or boulders will be sufficient to create a little noise so long as the water can flow around them.

Some more plants I think would look lovely are: Gunnera, massive plant with massive leaves, loves being close to water. Cornus Alba ‘Sibirica,’ (red dogwood), fab winter stems.

Creeping phlox, ideal for the top of a sunny bank. And there are plenty other plants including those that are commonly found in the wild.

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

I think the option of having the tv under the stairs.. Is the best idea.. Maybe have a tv, media unit made to measure if possible .. Draws or cupboards underneath for storage. Small shelves at the sides for little ink-naks. If needed.. A smaller maybe glass oblong table in front of the window. The table will still allow light through.. Making sure passable through to the stairs.. And the sofa on the back wall.. Lovely rug in the centre with coffee table or chest for extra storage if needed... Maybe some open floating shelves off set above the sofa. Use an accent colour with accessories.. From the rug or cushions.. Don't go overboard with large piece of furniture... Simple statements....

TRADESMEN. It's a miracle when one bothers to quote at all ... as such, I now build walls, can plaster, and drive a digger lol... I tile, fit carpets, fitted the kitchen, all with only half of one of my lower spinal discs left. By the time you get a quote back, its more often a month or more down the line and have already hired a couple of lads on a daily rate doing things how you dictate after weeks of research. I hired a roofer to replace my cast iron guttering with aluminium ones, he put up new soffits and fascias BADLY, ran off to assume weigh in my old gutters and ran off with the money for my new ones - steep learning curve there, and a CCJ is no use getting my money back. I purchased a kitchen, it turned up in bad shape, then commenced over 8 months to get to court for my money back... Hired a tree co to remove a load of trees overhanging the house and clear the boundary... an old man cried about a tree that wasnt his anyway so the tree folk abandoned the job. Thankfully I have a great electrician and a reliable plumbing company, but only call them for either gas or. heavier electrical work.... the husband does to electrics and plumbing but he hates it and we do get it checked. I keep trying to find a good builder though. Everything takes so long and its physically and mentally draining on me.... I would MUCH rather have someone I can trust but no luck yet.

Large gardens are all well and good if have the energy & ability and you can afford the time (or money) for maintenance, but it's not always ideal. The size of garden should be appropriate to the size of house and appropriate for the lifestyle of the owners.

Have you lived here long and therefore know whether the stream dries up or floods in different seasons/ years? Also does the stream carry contaminates from agriculture or just surface water? Depending on answers to above, excavating and creating a pond area could be a great option, with the continuous fresh water feed.

We had similar dilemma in our garden and in the end we piped it up and made it flat. I didnt like the thought of contaminated water. We had septic tank overflow from neighbours up the road running into ours. :-(
