Help thinking about where all the kitchen appliances should go?

I'm renovating a house and having headaches about how to effectively fit everything into the kitchen (appliances and storage along the kitchen wall)

Currently, there's just one kitchen wall to left. I opted to not have an island (which would have increased counter / appliance space) in order to maximize how open the kitchen is.

For the kitchen, must have appliances are:

- the fridge

- stove

- oven (likely below the stove)

- sink

- dishwasher (either one built into the sink - looks like a double sink from above, or a slimline one),

- microwave: this is giving me the biggest headache - prefer to have one hiding in the cabinets below the counter, but not sure if it should take up the space between the stove and sink

Note: the far left part of the kitchen wall can't have any heavy appliances built-in as there is a piping shaft that may need to be accessed from time to time

Any thoughts are appreciated! (even on types of appliances that may work given size etc.)

With everything being on one wall it looks (to me anyway) that the fridge freezer dominates the wall. I’d swap it for a 50/50 integrated upright fridge freezer and have a single oven and integrated microwave in a tall 600 wide housing. Hob still sited over a drawer pack somewhere in the run. Small drawers IMO are next to useless, so don’t have less than 600 wide. 800 is a good size for storage.

Integrated fridges seem quite skinny - would you suggest two of them? (at about 50cm wide each)

For the oven and integrated microwave, where would you suggest that go?

I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories

wow stellahome, what a grand house and entrance! I'm intrigued! Do you have many original features left in the house? servant bells maybe? :) Post some pictures for us! I am very familiar with lassco, in fact I currently live 5 mins away from there, and pop in often, they have many wonderful items which really enhance an old house. Took a couple of more pictures today of the dresser, as even though it looks very worn, look at the dovetail joint details! They certainly don't make them like this anymore (unless you pay a hefty price for it!)

Dear Everyone, Thank you so much for your help and support! I took on my architect who was quite emotional about it all- he loved the bathroom and thought I was *mad* to want to change it. However, I did and the builder helped us find some tiles. I am thrilled with the result. I kept some of the tiles in our bedroom shower, and love them in moderation. Here are some photos. I believe based on your sketch layout and model one should consider departing from a symmetrical layout and treat the kitchen as a zone along the rear wall or the opposing rear corner to the pantry Someone else has also commented that one should consider a layout that relates to the scale of the space and more units would be expected . Otherwise the kitchen may seem out of scale and too small Im slightly surprised that a designer or architect has gone to the trouble of designing the house and not provided indicative kitchen and other layouts considering you are not far off from first fix of the services.

Integrated fridge freezers are a standard size at 600mm. Most people only have one in their kitchen. Just shop wisely and don’t buy just in case items that may take up space.

You could have the FF and the oven/microwave tall unit next to each other (which would push things along as you’d need to allow a minimum of 1200mm) or have one at each end.

I think that the fridge is huge!! any reason for this or is it merely to have the American style fridge. if you chang it for a 600mm tall model you gain space . how about placing shelves in the 900mm space and putting the microwave on the shelf. alternatively you could have a unit that extend from the wall units to counter level with the space saved from the fridge unit and put the microwave within this space.

pull out ladders are great storage spaces, even a 300mm wide one helps and can give you space for your provisions.

I would I regret the fridge freezer. I wouldn't have integrated microwave on show like at all, just me personally. If you don't want it on the worktop you can get it in a cupboard/larder. Drawers are good but a 800 wide is better than 2 narrower ones. Also, maybe just 3 draws, not 4. How big gap under wall units do you have, looks small in the pics.

Thanks Ellie - the gap between the counters and the wall storage is 60cm (~2 ft), which I think is already taller than normal?

Around 500mm is the norm. If you have a high ceiling then opt for taller carcases to utilise the space which will mean instead of having a 720mm (normal) size wall carcase have 900 instead which will come with 3 internal shelves. It offers you more internal storage.

If ou like the idea of lots of fridge and freezer and integrated...Liebher do a freezer (only) unit that is integrated and makes ice. They you can get a fridge only unit integrated as well. Would you consider making the last panel on the right solid top to bottom? Then you could stack oven, microwave - maybe a small wine fridge with shelf on top. You would then be able to have a cupboard (or even better, drawers for pots and pans etc.) under the stove.

We're having a similar design issue as we need a larger fridge/freezer but are short of space. We've opted for a built in fridge freezer (with a larger fridge part and then another below counter size freezer for additional items. We're having the additional freezer built in to another tall larder style cabinet with the microwave/other gadgets in a cupboard above so it's hidden away. If you wanted something similar I'd suggest doing this somewhere where an open cabinet door wouldn't impede kitchen use though as the door would need to be open for ventilation while the microwave is in use.

Dear Ms England.

Just saw the layout of your kitchen. It's up to you as to whether you want to have an integrated Fridge / Freezer [ 50 / 50 or 70 /30 ] unit or a free standing one. I personally think that you should lay out your kitchen as follows :

You start from the steps going down with the Fridge / Freezer unit, whether free standing or integrated unit, then the oven and Microwave tall unit, then work top, then the hob [ allow for a 600 mm 5 rings burners, then equal work top, then the sink with drainer. It is better for the sink to be over looking the garden.

You should also change the toilet to fixed to the external wall and the wash-hand basin and cabinet to be fixed to the wall between the toilet and store.

iIf possible you should go for a 3 panel bi-folding doors rather that sliding doors.

It's worth to incorporate a 1340 x 1380 mm Velux Integra Electric window over the Dining area which will bring more lifgt to the Living Room beyond, I assumed.

You can reduce the floor to ceiling height of the kitchen to 2400mm or 2600 mm and it will save you on the cost of your kitchen unit. otherwise you will need a step ladder to get to the top shelves of the cupboards above the work top.

For the kitchen worktop, you can use quartz or granite as solid hardwood get affected by water stains over time and need to be sanded down and sealed at regular interval.

Thanks for the suggestions. The one issue is that the fridge (or any large appliance) cannot go where you've suggested as there is a door for pipes there that needs to be accessible (bottom left of the floor plan).

Given that, let me know if any further thoughts on the kitchen wall layout!

IKEA kitchen planner will warn you if you're doing something wrong (like restrictions to appliances next to each other)

Hi Kevin,

just read your comments. As far as the access door to the pipe-works are concerned , they are not affected by the kitchen layout I did proposed earlier. The Fridge / Freezer will start after the cladding enclosure to the pipework.

It's not that clear if this new kitchen Area is existing or New Construction.

Why is the designer showing blockwork partition instead of a dry wall construction.

Why is the Powder room floor set down 100mm below the finished floor level of the Kitchen / Dining.

The width of the bathroom can be reduced to 9oo mm instead of 1060 mm unless this is already existing built.

Why do you want to have 3No sliding doors panels between the dining and existing living room.

Are you still going for the floor to ceiling height of 2850.

If you are spending a lot of money for this new kitchen and extension, I would advise you to get a proper Kitchen designer to advise you accordingly.

I would have a full height double cupboard with hideaway doors to the left of the oven and put my microwave in there - that would add balance with the fridge.
