Need inspiration for high level garden/vic terrace extension
Comments (4)I've designed loads of steep gardens. They need careful consideration to work well. Measure the level change carefully (or get it professionally surveyed). They start planning it out on paper to make sure you can fit everything in. The danger is that you start by the house and create your largest seating/entertaining area here, then get to the top of the garden and end up with a steep bank that is not useful for anything. The general rule is that more small walls are better than one large, looming retaining wall. Invest in the garden structure (retaining walls) then make use of the levels. Create different rooms at different levels to give the garden some interest and ensure that you can use all the garden. Create an interesting journey around the garden and put a seating area in the sunniest spot. Soften walls by running steps parallel to the house rather than straight up the garden. Make use of the level changes with water features and cascading planting....See MoreGarden Steps levels
Comments (3)Hi Alison, Modern steps could work really well! The key with any steps is to ensure that the risers and treads are even all the way up! So the starting point will be to know the overall height difference between the bottom and the top. If they are not even throughout, it will feel awkward to walk up....See MoreInternal/ External Steps - Costs of lowering a floor to ground level?
Comments (0)About to embark on a wrap around extension. All plans passed and Building Warrant granted. However my other half is concerned about the cost of lowering the floor to be level with the new extension. At present there steps (6) to ground level. The plans have patio doors to the kitchen and garden room. I didn’t want an area of steps, I just wanted to open the doors and step out at ground level. Has anyone embarked on anything like this? I will try and add some plans. many thanks to all. I now have had costs for the extension and it was over 125k!! I could build a new house for that! I'm looking at just lowering the floor only in the kitchen/ family room. Now I need ideas as to how I incorporate these internal steps. I’m sure they could be configured for form over function. The blue area would be lowered with the existing floors remaining on the same level. The main reason for this is for the patio doors to be level to open out onto the garden. what do you guys recommend?...See MoreSame level patio or with steps down?
Comments (7)Thank you all for your comments and feedback - From the feedback seems that the benefits of having a flush transition to the exterior space outweighs the disadvantage of the big drop at the end. In terms of the steps, as the garden is small and not very deep wide steps from the end of the patio would take up too much space so I was thinking of using recessed steps (see image) - it reduces the usable patio space but keeps the garden area....See MoreAndrew
