Sunlight in my garden

Hi I am trying to get an idea of where I should place skylights in my new extension that I am doing. I have a just off center West facing garden, and I am building out 6 metres out into it. Any tips or ideas about skylight positioning? Is it better to have a long strip going down the room or across. How and when does a west facing garden get light. I have attached a floor plan and some pics to give those who can help a feel for what I am working with. Thanks in advance. Lee

Hi,

The sun travels from East and will set in the West.

In your case it really depends on the type of the extension and if the existing structure evershadows the skylights. Do you have a section showing the slope etc? (section E for example). Also your architects should be able to simulate this in 3D.

Is it a basement, are you building out to the wall there? Are you having any windows/doors other than the roof lights?

Hi there, there are a lot more transparent roller blinds these days, one could be fitted inside the curtain area or sill recess to be optionally pulled down on bright days. They are a less permanent and more modern option to hideous nets. In my south facing kitchen i have fitted a static lacy flower effect onto the windows. it creates privacy and is in a modern pattern. i found it on ebay, it is textured and 3d which creates a prism effect in the sun, very pretty. it could be cut into small shapes to fit in the leaded areas.

Titiankim that was also our original idea before we extended our kitchen into the hall. We planned to knock through into the dining room and swap the two rooms round so that the kitchen was more spacious and looking on to the garden. That being said, unfortunately the cost was way way too much so we opted for a galley style kitchen. We’ve opened up the kitchen/utility and the porch is becoming a w/c. Some of the house isn’t on the plans but basically there is a workshop and outdoor w/c attached to the utility but with no access from inside the house. This has also been knocked through so we have a long utility/boot room. Love to see some pics of your changes.

Love to see some pics of the rear of the house. Was just wondering what type of roof you are going for? Also wondering, whether as well as having skylights, roof windows or a roof lantern, the latter of which would look particularly nice on a listed building or one in a conservation area, that maybe a light tunnel could be installed to go directly in to the library. roof lantern:- Sky or Light tunnel:- Sun tunnels can go in roof spaces, but I have also seen them at source from an outside wall, going through the joist spaces in the ceiling above and coming out in the middle of the ceilings as above.

To answer the first question, yes there is an existing structure overshadowing the extension as I’m building off the back of my current property which is east of the extension.

I have attached a few screenshots of elevations which might help further.

We are building across the width of the garden which is roughly 4 and a half metres
We are having bi fold doors at the end.
My question is really about the best placement of skylights. Should I have 1 through the middle of the room? 2 strips either side of the room? Or as the current plans show one across the room at the start of extension and one at the bottom of extension
