Hall, stairs and landing dilemma
After nearly three years of living in a house that looks like a tribute to the squats I lived in in the 80s, we're finally doing the hall. We saw a glimpse of Oliver Thomas' lovely green hallway on the Great Interior Design challenge and managed to get super cheap Wickes paint two days later. Yay for click and collect! But we're not sure about doing the whole upstairs landing green. I had the idea of doing a gold feature wall at the top of the stairs, facing the front door. Either with paint or wallpaper., which could act as a buffer between the green and another colour. The hall ceiling and plaster we're committed to doing green, but what about the landing ceiling?
FYI the plan for the hall floor is to board it and lay sheet vinyl through the hall and kitchen. Probably b&w chequer board, though I'm open to other ideas. The stairs will be painted, with a painted runner (colour tbc).
Any advice on any of these colours gratefully received. Oh and currently the back of the front door is still coral, and the lobby is white. But we could change these.

Ps the photos are just work in progress shots, plus one of the lovely Oliver's house from the GIDC. Many more coats to go to get the intense green all over.

3 years agoHi Sam - I love that green. It looks absolutely brilliant already and once it's all done it'll be ace.
Do you ever look at the 'Mad about the house' blog? Your stairs reminded me of hers. Maybe you could consider a trompe l'oeil type wallpaper? This example is greys and mauve sort of colours which you could then build off for your upstairs landing?

Comments (2)Hello Stuart_Smith4711, Just reading your dilemma, it seems you have great options here, but naturally it comes down to a budget at the end of all ideas! These are some of my thoughts and options: Option 1: You could keep the contrasting spectrum of light and dark, which adds appeal but maybe change the colours altogether just to mix it up a bit. Option 2: It seems from your photos that you don't have much light around the stairways. You could change the darker spectrum to a lighter spectrum as well. This will bounce more light around those shady areas of the stairways. Option 3: Get a wallpaper mural, whether for just for the lighter spectrum or both. This will create "another world" between the floors of your house, which will be interesting as you pass through. Option 4: Hang your eclectic art pieces as you wish along the stairways walls. Perhaps theming them up or down the stairs by size, soft colours to bright colours, etc. Option 5: Buy some new artwork for a change of scenery. Option 6: Have some bespoke artwork specifically created for complimentary or contrasting effect to your final decision of decor. Comments (5)Joa's white is darker with a warm beige undertone and to be honest may look too warm with all the oak. Skimming Stone is lighter but does have a violet undertone and that may not work with the Pointing (which has a cream undertone). Comments (4)It would be really useful to post a few photos. A lot depends on the actual space, but also the exact colour of the carpet and tiles. I don't think I would go for pure white with quarry tiles, it could look a bit harsh. Earthy stoney colours could work well with quarry tiles....See MoreKatie Duke

3 years agoHi Sam, how’s things? OMG ❤️ that is such a bold colour....I think it’s going to look fantastic! Yes to gold wallpaper on top of the landing. Funnily enough I was having a look for wallpaper on beut.co.uk yesterday, they have some gorgeous designer wallpapers without having to filter out all the boring ones 😄, might give you some inspo. Then came across this https://www.blackpop.co.uk/products/gold-wallpapers-for-walls-uk very pricey tho.....ouch!
I was looking at your stairs and instantly thought pink stripes. Don’t know why. A bit like those sweet shop paper bags. Probably a step to far....but a striped or spotted runner could go well i think.

3 years agoPersonally, I like the green with the white and think it has more power if it doesn't fight with too many other elements of colour/pattern. I would use smaller amounts of the green upstairs, as in maybe a chandelier or artwork and balance the green downstairs with calming elements. Liza Giles is an ex Conran stylist and amazing painter whose house is often used for shoots including Farrow and Ball. Emerald Green is her colour and although she doesn't appear to have entire wall painted in it, I think her choice of materials with the green is stunning. Different greens with wood, white walls and black and natural materials looks amazing.

Colourhappy, excellent advice. I'll get the green up first, and look for a green light fitting for the landing. I fancy something with a cascade of multiple bulbs. Or a big woven shade sprayed green, though this might be a bit dark.
Jonathan, I may go for wallpaper but I like the idea of doing a decorative artwork on board, loosely based on Rachel's wallpaper recommendation, a bit like Victoria describes. I'll have a go and if it looks awful I'll burn it!
And I'll revisit the stairs and landing walls after the rest is done. My gold leaf arrived yesterday. Been having fun with it ...

3 years agoHi Sam, I’ve had a bit of fun with gilding over the years - the glue was the hardest bit, and the best I found is one called wondersize- you can thin it down with water and it stays tacky for 24 hrs or so. Keep trying! X
