Flooring throughout? Tiles?

I'm looking at buying a large granite house, typically they are very cold. I'm wondering what type of flooring would be best with small children and pets? So far carpets stain and the pets are pulling out the carpet threads! Laminate lasted 6 months before it was ruined by spilt drinks, potty training and general through traffic (wasn't the cheap stuff and the spills were cleaned up right away).
Will tiles be a better solution? Will they be too cold? Will the break too easily if the kids drop anything?
Am I missing something more practical?

Hi, porcelain tiles may be the answer. They are very tough and easy to clean, yet look amazing. The only drawback is they are cold underfoot so under floor heating may be a good idea, budget allowing. However I have them in my kitchen in slate effect without UFH and it’s fine. Funnily enough someone else has a similar dilemma on another post! Porcelain comes in so many finishes from stone effect to wood effect and here’s a few examples.

My house is tiled throughout with wet UFH. Porcelain wood effect tiles, we have teenage boys, a dog, two cats and are really awkward. In the five years we’ve been in we’ve had zero tile damage. I’ve never regretted it and still love my tiles.

I would recommend porcelain tiles as they are hard wearing, low maintenance & easy clean. Natural stone is another option but factor in future maintenance. I would also consider UFH, having no radiators gives you more options for room layouts when all walks are free. If you prefer a wooden floor, go for a quality engineered timber. Regards Karl

Personally I'm not a carpet fan and would love wood floors throughout. You/people can always put a large rug in the bedroom if they want something soft underfoot. We have wood flooring (ok so it's laminate but we are selling next year and won't reclaim money spent on real wood floors!) all downstairs but need carpet on the stairs due to rubbish treads. Also going for carpet in one bedroom as it's cheaper and we are running out of funds, ha ha. A lot of people like carpet in the bedrooms though so it depends if you are doing it for yourself or to sell? Hardwood wouldn't be overkill though - especially if you are tiling in other places

UFH throughout or UFH with radiators

Shan on our system you can run the UFH independently from the rads as they are two completely separate heating circuits, and we also have the towel rails in the bathrooms on their own separate circuit too, so you can have them on in the summer without having to put the rest of the heating on at all. In addition, you can run each part of our UFH circuit independently from the rest of the underfloor heating. So, if you only use the sitting room in the evening you can just have the underfloor on in the kitchen or hallway or dining room or wherever you are and want to heat, during the day (for example) and the sitting room only comes on in the evening because each room has an individual thermostat for that part of the circuit. It is very clever but was pretty expensive to install and we only did that as we completely gutted and renovated the entire house (as Suzanne says above taking up floorboards and joists and relaying the entire subfloor and pouring concrete is no joke of a job!) so depends on your reno plans and budget.

LVT in a kitchen is a really practical choice, and with the huge choice of designs available now, it can look great as well. Having said that, many of our customers opt for wood throughout the ground floor to give a feeling of flow and continuity, and as long as you're quick to wipe up any spills wood can also work brilliantly in the kitchen. Rugs are a great way to 'zone' off certain area's if you wish to break it up a bit. We have lots of engineered wood floors similar to the one in your link, and depending on where you live, may be able to help out (we cover much of Surrey, Hampshire and SW London).
