Garden design feedback :)
Hi everyone :)
We are planning to get our garden done and would appreciate any feedback on the design. We’ve had some gardeners provide suggestions and used Pinterest etc. I want the modern look of clean lines without it being overly modern. The lounge is at the back of the house so we look over the garden.
It’s a north facing plot, clay soil and a new build so need to start with having proper drainage! The garden slopes towards the house so we also plan on having it levelled. We will also need a step down from the gate onto the garden as the drive slopes
The plan so far is:
Drainage
Patio off house, full width of the garden. Remove shed and replace with a smaller bike store. This area gets zero sun
Paving slabs as stepping stones from patio off house to patio at right hand corner of garden, where we get plenty of sun
Smaller patio in left hand corner of garden to pull the eye across
Porcelain paving for patios
Plant beds running along fence from front to back patios and between the two patios (undecided on using everedge, railway sleepers or something else)
Gravel boards or something else under fence as weeds etc grow through the gap
New turf with good quality topsoil
We have had some gardeners to quote for the above and also more of a landscaper who is taking our idea and designing something, so will be interesting to see what he comes up with. I’ve asked the gardeners to date for feedback on what I am suggesting and this has been limited. So I am hoping this means my ideas are decent! One suggested making the two back patios the same size with the top right patio being composite decking so this is something to consider

Comments (5)It looks like it comes from the 'Brutalist' style of architecture. That may be something to do with the colour and size of the piece in your picture but I can't see many people wanting such a door in their house! Comments (20)The oven positon looks quite precarious to me, it looks as if you'd need to stand at an angle to remove things? I also agree re drawers, you can also get ones with a simple divider for pan lids which I know I'd find useful. I personally prefer just one "unit" below/above the hob or it looks split in two. The wall units also look a little low over the hob but I think that might just be an illusion with the Upstand! I'm also not too sure re the tiles, have you tried it continuing the worktop as a splashback (is it marble?). I love the green and white combo btw but it can look a little cold but I think a pile of wooden chopping boards on that back wall would solve that. I'd also continue the brass/gold for the tap. Totally personal but I would prefer a separate fridge and freezer (although actually I'd go 1.5 fridge!) rather than the double larder But obviously look at what you store. Comments (5)Try and have a 900 L shaped base in each corner instead of straight corner base units. By doing this you have 2 x 316mm doors on which both open giving you full access to the whole of the area. When you have a straight corner base as you have with the 900 you will be on your knees to fully access the deep corner. On the left hand side you will need a 600 L shaped wall and a 300 wall each side of it to correspond with the 900 L base. You may have to mkve the sink over slightly in this area. 3 years agoLooks a good plan but I agree with Alix that do you really need two patios at the end? I would carry the flower border on the left to the end and the back of the garden, and at the back of the patio on the right. This can be planted to create a lovely backdrop to the seating area.
With the main patio, I would leave a space either end for planting to soften the area. There are plenty of plants that enjoy shade such as Fatsia Japonica and Japanese Acers. Paving without flower borders can look very “prison yard”!
Lastly, I would stick with outdoor porcelain for a modern look, or sandstone paving for something more rustic. I was considering composite decking but after a thorough research it’s not as hard wearing as marketed, it shows wear within 10 years and starts to decompose within 20 years, whilst paving will last forever. Here’s some pics for inspiration and note the abundance of planting even with these modern gardens.
