Putting in a gas fire and fireplace

We've just bought a new house, and the living room currently has no fireplace or fire. The back wall is an external wall, however I'm unsure about the practicalities of putting a gas fire in. A couple of questions:

1. If the gas point isn't already there, how big a job is it likely to be to hook everything up?

2. The wall is flat (i.e. no chimney breast) and I'm slightly reluctant to pub in a false / stud wall in order to create the necessary recess for the fire as the room isn't particularly wide. I wanted to put in a fireplace and fire similar to this:

What are my options if I don't want to put in that stud wall? Is there any way to get a look similar to the above without a recess? Something like this looks like it might work (Infinity 780BF):

Both of the fires you have posted links for will be no good unless you are prepared to build an internal or external chimney breast.

if you go into a fireplace showroom you will see that contemporary flame effect gas fires sit behind the mantlepiece so you will been about 45 cm behind the wall.

Moving the gas to the lounge depends on where it is in the house and how your gas engineer can do it.... for instance if you have a floor with a space under in it is a lot easier than if you have concrete floors (as in lots of brand new houses).

Instead of these gas fire ideas consider an electric flame effect fire. These are much slimmer.

There are some lovely electric fires available now, from contemporary to traditional. Some of them even have a misting system which looks like smoke but without the pollution. I have a faux log burner which is perfect for chilly evenings at this time of year. You just plug them in.

The unfortunate truth is the TV and fireplace are both competing for the same space and any solution is a compromise. Regardless of your desire for a fire it is bad anatomically to hang a TV too high. There is plenty of information online about the best viewing height and viewing distances for different sizes of TV. All this advice is ignored by many people - including professional interior designers. Looking at the design of fireplace you supplied perhaps you could bring a TV into the room and place it on the raised hearth when you want to watch it? My bet is that is the arrangement you would normally live with and then you would remove the TV from your room when you have guests? Or you could put a TV on a mobile stand that you can place in position when you want to watch it? You can get stands that would also take a SKY box or similar. The problem is trailing cables - and where the stand is positioned when not in front of the fire! You can even get devices that enable TVs to rise from the floor but they’re very expensive. Or you could project onto a screen that unfolds from the ceiling. Also very expensive. In my case, I opted to forgoe the fireplace, knowing the TV played a more important part in my everyday life. The room was then designed accordingly. Am I happy with the result? Yes and no but as I said at the beginning any solution - other than a separate TV room - is a matter of compromise.

You don't have to take the surround out if that's what you mean, although as I said in my other reply the hearth looks too big. Get a Gas Safe authorised person/company to take out the fires and cap off the existing gas.

There will most likely be a gas pipe running under the floorboards to that gas supply. You need a gas engineer to re route that gas pipe slightly so it terminates at the fireplace itself (not sure why it doesn’t already tbh). Hopefully this can be done via a cellar or crawl space rather than lifting the floor, however if boards do need lifting it probably won’t be many. Then you need something like a Nu Flame gas fire (like a black box which sits in the grate) as mentioned above. Nu Flame is a good brand, not the cheapest out there but good quality I’m told. Again gas engineer needs to install this.

Thanks for the advice guys - it sounds as if we're going to have to look at an electric option or finding another way to create a focal point in the room. I had previously considered an electric wallmounted one (and would still consider installing a small false wall at a push, so that it didn't protrude) - any recommendations?
