Cleaning Tips Fireplaces

fireplace dilemma

Recently moved in and need advice on this fire surround. It was very badly stained, so i have cleaned as much as i can . It is still stained and looks a bit unsightly. I thought it may be limestone, but not sure? I used specialist limestone cleaner and good elbow grease.

Should i paint it? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with it please. Thanks

I love it and I would leave it as it is. It does look like limestone.

The problem is the stark cold white walls against the soft warm browns of the fireplace. I don't recommend going all beige but try colours from the same warm spectrum as the fireplace and I think you'll find it looks more natural in the space. Also, the round candles don't work with the squares and oblongs of the fireplace; find other accessories that enhance rather than scream at the shapes and colours and that could make a huge difference. So could a mirror or picture above it - it would shift the focus so the fireplace doesn't dominate. Work with it, not against, then judge it. These fireplaces are handsome; trying to pretty them doesn't work.

Perhaps slate tops and center? That would get rid of the wooden tops, give you a nice matching hearth and not change it all too much

Recently installed a new stove - we removed an ugly 80s tiled open fire and installed a stove. It’s a small opening on a small breast so there aren’t any store bought fireplace surrounds that seem to suit.

Looks great. Stains like these on a material like this look natural.

Thank you ED. It had loads of ring marks before, which were horrible (why would you leave tea/coffee cups on a lovely old fireplace ??!! ). Thankfully most of them have been scrubbed off.
