Horizontal or diagonal placing of tile in Shower

Good Morning! We will be using this porcelain tile on the floor of our bathroom & want to use it on the wall as a feature in shower area (similar to pic below)
Not sure whether to ask tiler to fit tiles horizontally of diagonally. It’s not a big bathroom. Any help & suggestions greatly appreciated thank you 🙏

Thanks so much Sonia for taking the time to post the pics, I love them. This is one is the colour of the surrounding tile I like, thought the lighter the better? Going to use 600x600

Definitely not diagonally. Horizontal or vertical. Though the first pic does look very much like flooring...... not sure it would look right on a wall.....

Thanks Ellie, oops just noticed I said diagonal 🙈 meant vertical. Thought it might make a good feature but welcome thoughts/opinions.

If you set a 1700 length P shape shower bath horizontally infront of the window - but brought down the 200mm to clear the soil pipe - have a very slightly angled boxing at the rear of the bath ( so water hitting the tiled boxing flows into the bath ) you would have more standing room in the bath to use it as a shower too - not quite the two separate zones you are after - but more arm room than a standard bath shower ... Might be simpler to install too . If you stagger the basin and loo so there's more room in front of either, that would work better too in my opinion.

the original plan was between sink and mirror EXACTLY imetre and then a STRIP above the mirror to the ceiling but the builder says you won't see it so high up as it's tiles up to 2 40 metres. An extra 3-4 tiles. and if I don't do it underneath the sink will look weird. another 4 titles. not in the budget I'm afraid. any other ideashowi can use about 8 tiles of 30x30???

@carolina LOOOOOOVE the wood effect shelf but sadly the wall behind the bath is an outer wall and cannot be 'carved' to create such a cavity. We will have a recess but it will be smaller. The strip between the tiles is a pencil rail, almost invisible but used to connect the two types. The only reason I don't have the herringbone mosaic all the way to the bottom of the wall is pricing. It is way more expensive than the normal tiles of the same range. So need to be creative but within a certain budget.

Hello Tani I agree with Kikiamack with regards to the length of the screen, I was advised a minimum of 1.2m of glass to stop water coming out and a minimum size of 1.7m for walk in shower. I was originally going to have a walk in shower of 1.7m x 0.8m with a 1.2m of screen (0.5m gap for entry ) but then decided to have an enclosed shower instead of 1.2m x 0.8m. It's still very spacious. I know walk in showers do look great but if the screen is not long enough and water comes out all the time it will annoy you every time you have a shower. I went for the Crosswater Design sliding door shower enclosure with 8mm of glass. It has a frameless look, soft closing door and price is reasonable. They probably have a similar hinged door version. With regards to the towel rail, perhaps a small one that doesn't stick out too much, would be useful? Are you going to have any recesses in the shower area to put shampoo, shower gel etc? Where is your lighting going? I made the mistake of not doing research as beforehand and just asked the electrician to put 4 downlights in evenly spaced, now I have a very annyoying light shining down on my head when I stand by the basin and in front of my mirror - very unflattering as it creates shadows, luckily my my mirror has lights.

2nd Option Not sure whether or not to put white or grey textured tile as tile feature & big 600x600 white tile surrounding in bathroom. Vanity unit (slate) & shower tray/ wall radiator all graphite grey

It all seems rather dark and depressing (please don’t be offended!). All that tiling creates a coldness. I’m going to throw in a curve ball, and you may hate it, but how about a nice fresh white with patterned floor tiles? It may be your idea of hell, but just a suggestion.

Thanks for your honesty Sonia. We have already bought the floor tile as we had it left over from the kitchen. Maybe because the kitchen is bigger it doesn’t feel cold. I like the patterned tiled but husband hates them, thinks they will date. It’s the walls that we need advice for, thanks

Re patterned tiles, maybe it’s a hubby thing, I don’t particularly like them and also think they’re a bit of a fad. 😊

I think I would go for the tiles just on the floor and then maybe a metro tile on the wall in whatever colour you like and fits with the room. White is always good if in doubt!

Yes fair enough, we all have differing tastes. Sorry I didn’t realise you already had the tiles. I found this image where they are used on a wall (ignore the floor) and some other images just for your info. They seem to look really nice with white, I think.

I have exactly the same tile in my downstairs loo and laundry room and they are only halfway up the walls horizontal and painted white above.

Mairead: I’m planning vertical because of the grout lines. I feel they’d be less in my face than horizontal. I haven’t tested them yet in situ, though. My builder won’t be available again until August. His April start date was cancelled due to covid.

Another question please.... advice as to what size you think we should go with. Currently we have two sizes as pic above. We can either go with two sizes of tile on floor & shower feature or go with smaller till on floor & shower feature. Decisions decisions 🤷‍♀️ just concerned as it’s not a big bathroom. Thanks any advice welcome

Good Morning Mairead,

The warmth in the timber finish will make the room inviting. Attractive tiles. I would advise that less is more in terms of tile coverage, leaving some wall exposed in areas creates less echo and feels more open. Utilising the same tile on the floor and wall will be beautiful, soften the corners and make the room feel larger.

If you place the tiles horizontally the room will feel wider, if you place them vertically the height of the room will be elongated. Horizontal lines are more relaxed, vertical lines are more confident.

Use of both the tile sizes, as shown in your original image, will look more realistic and natural. This means the space feels more authentic.

You are very welcome Mairead,

I recommend thinking about your taste, lifestyle and the rest of your home. To avoid the larger tiles looking very clinical the coverage can be kept down.Colour, lighting and more can also help.

Large tiles like this are very popular. Many say that they make the room feel larger however that is not always the case if only one or one and a half tiles fit within a space. On the other hand, the amount of grout that requires cleaning will be reduced.

I concur mostly with your original idea of utilising left over timber finish tiles, timber can be relaxing and timeless and tends to hide footprints also. This can also ensure that the rooms are connected through the same material palette.

Our gut instinct is best along with expert opinions.

It’s making me think that I may not need to fully tile all the bathroom? I quite like the fact that we could add colour if we don’t fully tile but then I think it would look more clean lined if we fully tile. I guess it’s a personal choice. Just wish I had your vision Sophie 😁
