Brush, roller recommends??

Hi, I've taken the plunge and decided on Farrow and Ball Dimpse (silvery grey) for redecorating the lounge\kitchen\small flat. Their tester pots were way better than the Dulux ones.

Brushing two coats created an very smooth finish, noticeably smoother than the dulux testers.

I'm going to follow their rules, (damn the expense, which is considerable...) using an undercoat and two coats.

Whats the best sort of brush or roller for this relatively small apartment? Will a brush or a roller produce a better more even finish?

Also, I'll have to do some sanding thanks of rough edges here and there. Whats the best little dust buster sort of vacuum??

I’ll be honest I’ve never used an undercoat when painting walls, although I do use a primer with woodwork. If the walls are newly plastered then an undercoat is advisable. My sitting room is Farrow & Ball Cromarty, and it was painted straight over the old paint, which was cream. The walls were in very good condition and two coats was enough and gave a lovely finish. I usually use a brush for the cutting in, and then a roller for the rest. It does splatter a bit so cover everything. I used to have a DustBuster but it was so weak it just didn’t perform well. Maybe the newer models are better? Best to read some reviews to gauge which one is best on Amazon, Argos etc.

For farrow and ball paints you should definitely follow their instructions for a smooth finish. Rollers work best and use brushes for cutting in and use low tack masking tape around windows and anywhere else you don’t want paint.
I used my dyson when I was sanding and cleaned out all the filters and vents etc after, was so painful to do, if you have an alternative then great.

Elizabeth, don't be mislead thinking anyone different to Howdens, B&Q or Ikea will be more expensive. We are a small joinery and kitchen company based in Staffordshire and like for like we compete with the 3 major sellers above. As a word of caution Howden's worktops are cheap and nasty. They do not have a laminate backing on them. You open a dishwasher door and the heat from the appliance goes straight up into the underside of the worktops. It's not long before the quality, or lack of, shows up. If you're looking for a decent worktop look for a Bushboard brand e.g. Prima, Omega or Odyssey or Axiom by Formica or Egger.

Hi, I don't think either would be wrong, it just depends on your style. If going for black I would recommend accessorising the room with subtle hints of black to anchor the look. Thanks Sonia, the walls are typical recent build stud partition, they've been painted two or three times. I remember the previous painters saying the walls just "drank" the paint, so maybe that will provide a base.

Yes the first “mist” coat goes straight into the plaster, but it sounds like you have a sound base for your paint. Good luck.
