How high should our beam be?

We are having an inglenook built in our extension. It will be 220cm wide. The internal depth will be 4 bricks deep. The pillars will be 2 brick lengths wide.
We are using old farmhouse bricks and have a nice rustic appearing beam.
The inglenook will house a hunter herald slimline 8 woodburner.
We were wondering how high the beam should go, does anyone have any suggestions?

Best off asking the installer of the wood burner as it will need to be signed off .by appropriate body ( HETAS probably if you are in uk ) or phone hetas to ask them

Hi. I would do something like the attached which isn't particularly to scale but existing bed 2 has been reduced to 10x10. I'd only make the bathroom a bit bigger unless you want to widen it by taking a little from the new Master bedroom. Move the bath down 20-30cm and have shelves built in floor to ceiling for storage. If you wanted you could have pocket doors from the lounge through to the office (with sofa bed) so you can open the whole lot up for entertaining etc. if you do that just think about resale ie accessing bedroom from lounge unless you do convert the loft so it won't end up being a bedroom. I'd buy a unit to house the tv and books. Maybe think about a dining table that can double up as prep area. In any case I'd get one with a bench seat that slides under on the kitchen side to save space. I'm not a pro though so just my thoughts!

I think this looks great. Could I please ask is the ceiling brilliant white? In my experience decorators are a bit old school about ceilings and radiators being bright white but in my opinion painting the radiator in Dix Blue would make it disappear. In my opinion the slightly vintage feel of Dix blue is better suited with a soft or aged white- I like Cornforth White for its grey quality which in my opinion only looks grey when contrasted against brilliant white but would soften the look in this room.

After carrying out all that work and the expenditure I would not bother adding more to the workload by adding a porch. You have a modern fronted dwelling so IMO there’s no need to clutter the front by adding a porch especially one with Oak beams as it’s not in keeping with the existing house. That is more suitable to period properties which yours is not. You do need some steps for ease of entering the front door and I would make this a feature perhaps by having a large semi circle double height step if it allows. Perhaps add the step in a blue brick which would tone in nicely with the front door.

Hi there, thats correct - it doesnt necessarily increase the chances of mould or mildew, rather it may be visible sooner if it is an older house or one could have any damp issues sooner. Although I am not totally familiar with the house so I wouldn't like to advise too much on this! With any tiling you would still have to consider the cleaning as the grout (depending on the colour) will ware over time too. Another option that can be quite effective is tiling the floor and the walls in the same tile all over, however I see the floor tiles are already laid - love these by the way! I would consider going floor to ceiling as you will have a clean and contemporary finish with bigger impact to match the rest of the house. As with any advice on here, it is slightly more difficult to tell without seeing the room in person, however I think what you have got is going to look lovely either way! Given the inglenook is so big (it obscures the window and leave a tiny corner the the left) you might consider putting the beam at ceiling height or the top of the window to increase the size of space in the room.
I think given how it is illustrated on the picture you have posted you need to satisfy yourself its not going to be too big for the room before proceeding further.
