what happened to my rose?

A few weeks ago my Rose tree had dozens of lovely white roses. However, now there are barely any and those that are left have got pink spots.

Do you know what type of rose it is? I wonder if it’s a rambler which many put all their effort into flowering once in June and then that’s it. If it is a climber, shrub rose, floribunda etc, then dead head regularly, that is cut back the dead flowers to a healthy shoot. This will encourage the rose to make new flowers.

I cannot see the leaves very well in your picture but roses can be prone to several diseases such as black spot, rust, mildew etc. A clearer picture of the leaves will help. I will say the torrential rain we’ve recently has has knocked the petals off many of my roses but I’ve cut back the dead flowers ready for the next lot.

I would concur with all of Sonia's advice.

The pink spots I don't think are anything to worry about. A lot of white roses develop red/pink spots/flushes on the petals as the flower begin to pass over.

My other thought is that the rose may be very dry and also hungry. I don't know where you live, but certainly in the South East we have had about 4-6 days of decent rain in the last 2-3 months at a time of year when we would expect a lot of rain. It is possible that the rose is very thirsty. If things are dry then give it a thorough soaking with a hose for 5 minutes, to let the water really soak down into the soil. A quick splash of water won't be enough. Also roses are hungry plants and like a regular feed. There are lots of brands of rose feeds available so I would suggest giving it a good feed and then ideally top dress the soil with a good organic mulch like well rotted farmyard manure. This will help feed it in the longer term and also help retain moisture.

HiTino Felly, Marie Here. Your off to a great start - but you've made a common mistake in that you've found your inspiration for your colour palette, but your not committing to it. You need to bring the greens and blues up onto the walls and onto the floor - commit to it. You could: - add a great throw rug underneath the bed, - add big table lamp beside the bed - or better yet, a wall sconce, - drapery isn't really the best choice for this bedding - I would have brought in a bold graphic print here, in either the blue or the green - artwork can stay neutral - even do a collection of mixed metals in chrome, gold, and have fun with that - if you add too much in the blue and green it becomes boring and un-special. Choose your accessories carefully, I'd change out your drapery - go with something bolder, I'd also get a larger night stand so you could put a proper table lamp there. Good Luck!

Thanks all, I’m shocked that two roses bought at completely different times of year from different stores are both labelled incorrectly! I will be more careful about where I buy from in future! Yes I do have the yellow (the yellow that should have been was actually a gift) but not in the place that I wanted, as I specially wanted yellow close to the house and the dark orange to grow against my shed which is painted dark slate grey. The white (should have beeN yellow) from Tesco has grown so much I don’t think it will be possible to change it at this point, but maybe I will contact b and q about what should have been the orange as this was only planted earlier this year and has not grown much yet!

Not a good mix at all. In fact advice is not to mix cleaning fluids. I would rinse the draining board with clean water thoroughly and put water down the sink to wash it all away. I would also open the windows to let the room air. Throw away the cloth you used. If you still feel unwell then call 111.

With difficulty to be honest. If you can find a local person who is knowledgeable that's probably your best bet. You could also look a the David Austin and Peter Beales websites and see if you can identify it from the flower and description - but very difficult that way really.

It may not be that important actually. Climbers and ramblers you prune in much the same way - laying and tying in new growth on the horizontal stimulates the best flowering. Try to remember what it has done in previous years - did it flower on and off all summer (repeat flowering) or a one off big show of flowers (single blooming) - and that should set your expectations of what it should be capable of. Good pruning in autumn or spring, regular feeding, treating any fungal diseases and watering if there is a dry spell are the ways to ensure maximum flowering for all roses.
