Style ideas for these two arches

I bought these two frames 30x40cms for the arches and was going to hang and style around them. Are they a bit too small for the space?
I've been looking at tips for decorating mantles but with there being two I don't know if they should mirror each other? I'm a bit confused about it all!
I'm now thinking about large industrial window style mirrors in each as they would fill the space out more.

Hi Laura, I do think the frames are a little small but I suppose it depends on what you are thinking of putting around them. I do prefer the mirror idea but you might struggle to get a perfect fit unless you get something custom cut/made and then times that by two.

With the mirror idea, I can't help thinking it would look much better in a darker wall (the whole wall including recesses and wooden ledges) sorry if you've just painted 🙄 I think that would also be more forgiving if standard mirror you find do not exactly match the aperture, especially if you prop some artwork and trailing plants etc on the ledges.

Finally you might want to check out rebel walls for its faux window wallpaper. One example below but they're got a few different options that might work and be fun to try. At £33 per m2 it might be cheaper than something more bespoke.

Oh another finally (🤦‍♀️) some photos taken further back and others showing the rest of the room would be helpful for other ideas and input.

Hi Sarah, Some great advise there! If you were to move the books up, might be good to lay them horizontally (unless you use heavy book ends). Below are some more examples. Vintage style jars can add character to the Kitchen (Also with wall being white). If you have relatively small items (e.g. glasses), standing them on a tray adds nice order (H&M Home had great options in the past). I always think personal touches are lovely, maybe something brought from holiday. Hope that helps!

Thank you again, ladies and E D! E D, we are on the Wye river on the border between England and Wales. We managed to track some of the people who lived here over centuries based on the unique name of the cottage (which I am not going to mention here). One was a curate who wrote a few poems about the place, then a local doctor, then a vicar (although the nearest church is about 1 mile away) - that covers the 19th century. Back to house, a pale cream was on my list of colours, Sonia, together with some light grey. Someone thought a dark orange, or pale brick red would look good, but I’m not that bold. The main impact will be on the other side of the house which is all rendered. PS we managed to get rid of the hot tub, I can’t tell you how happy that makes me, even though we had to take down part of the garden wall to get it out.

Hi Karen, to go a bit further with the excellent idea of up down lighting, if you were to go for something like this you'd enhance that even further Or have you seen the coving or skirting boards that allows dimmable led lighting to be installed? Orac decor supply this, and you can purchase it in lots of places, it's also great value, if there is room for any of that inside the arch that would be perfect. Tonnes of light, negates the need for wall lights entirely and completely controllable depending on the time of day.

I agree that the whole place needs a paint job, its my boyfriends place and its all magnolia. I've just thrown out a load of his furniture and bought new stuff so I will approach the paint gently!
I'm not afraid of dark strong bold colours at all but not sure about this wall on its own. I did my entire living room a blue black and its stunning... but with just doing one wall I'm a bit more confused. What colour are you thinking?
His living room has an open plan kitchen coming off it (a back to front L shape from the arches) with country cream cupboards so a dark colour in the living room would be a stark contrast that I dont think would work. We won't be changing the kitchen cupboards as its a rental, so looking for easy wins.
I'm going to go look at the wall papers now ... they look really great thank you.

I see what you mean now about one dark wall having seen all of the space. I was thinking of the 'faux' mirrors or windows just for the two arches, recesses which I'm not sure would be as effective on the lighter wall. Colourwise I was thinking of something like you suggested you've done in your own place but maybe even a dark olive-ish green here? Not sure that's much help sorry.
Colourhappy is a houzzer on here who gives great advice on colour so hopefully she'll see you post too.

Is it an option to remove the sills and board over the arches so the wall becomes flat? They add nothing to the room. This would be an easy DIY fix or a cheap quick job for a trade.

No we aren't keen to spend or change the rental too much as we are saving for a deposit for our own place. So when I think about it even just buying window mirrors is an expense we could do without as they would probably not be useful in a new place.
So back to basics, should I maybe get two larger frames to hang landscape and keep the 30x40cm frames to set portraits and build up a display that way.

Sorry, not taking enough care when reading! I would paint the inside of the arch and the sill the same colour as the wall so it disappears as much as possible. I also agree that buying 2 mirrors is going to be an expense that would be valuable in your own house buying pot! Another idea is to look out for a big rectangular wall hanging of some sort or box framed print that would cover both of the arches and the wall between. I am thinking along the lines of a Kilim rug that are quite light weight for their size. eBay would give you a few ideas and be within budget without breaking into your house buying fund.

Good idea mii2. You've just reminded me of someone wanting to hide a useless window on a wall. They got cheap 2x2 wood and knocked together a large frame to cover the whole window. They then stretched fabric (actually a Frida Khalo shower curtain 🤣👍!) over it and stapled it at the back.

Did the job and then a great piece of large artwork to take with them when they moved!!
