Help! Has our polished concrete patio gone wrong?
Comments (12)Hi Felicia, sorry to hear that this has happened to you too. It sounds like you have had a similar floor to us - was yours a poured concrete floor i.e. you had an 8-10mm topping poured on top of a screed? Do you know what make of material was used? So, over a year on from my initial post, we ended up having to pull the floor up and get it re-done by someone who knew what they were doing. This time, we ended up going for a solid slab of concrete which was polished up and looks great (but it cost a hell of a lot more!). The bubbles would have created problems outside in terms of water getting in, freezing, expanding and then cracking the concrete over time. But, when I was looking for a new contractor to re-do the floor (we didn’t pay the other guy anything), one of the contractors who was excellent stated that they could have repaired the floor with all of the bubbles. Essentially, the floor hadn’t been primed properly and this sort of thing can apparently happen if there are big differences between the substrate and air temperatures. They mentioned that there was a way to grind down a layer and fill in the holes so I wouldn’t despair just yet. It is a shame that your contractor is being unhelpful - ours was too. I can only suggest trying to call around some other contractors to see what can be done in the first instance. Alternatively, a lot of resin floors can now give a very similar effect to polished concrete but the cost is not cheap. Please feel free to come back to me if you need to as I know how disappointing this sort of thing is....See MorePorcelain or Sandstone Paving?
Comments (1)In the grand scheme of things the difference in the acquisition cost is probably not so bad as more of the cost of laying the patio will be labour. You should check that the installation costs don’t vary too much. There is lots of conflicting advice about sealing stone so you may decide not to do it and save the maintenance - those against sealers point to Roman ruins and say that 2000 years later the stone still looks pretty good without sealer! If the objective is to have a seamless finish between the inside and out then you should go for the porcelain- stone changes colour in the wet and oven the first few years iron will rise to the surface of the stone giving it a brown quality that will be more noticeable when wet....See MoreResin used on patio?
Comments (5)My sister has just had her drive done in gravel resin edged with pavers. It looks and feels amazing and it is permeable, as you say. I think it would make an great patio. It also feels “bouncy”! The biggest problem is finding someone to lay it properly. There are a lot of cowboys about! She used a landscaper called Orangescapes and they cover Herts and Beds. Here’s some pictures of it as a patio....See MoreHelp with outdoor paving!
Comments (1)I have porcelain and Indian Sandstone in my garden. Porcelain comes in different R ratings (R9 - R13). The higher the rater the better the non slip effect. Mine is R13 and is completely non slip even in the pouring rain. The drawback is the non slip finish means it holds onto dirt and can get grubby (mine does), so rather annoying! Never have the R13 indoors as cleaning it is difficult. The sandstone is a natural finish that comes in a riven rustic finish and a calibrated finish which is more modern and straight edged. It comes in many shades from grey, beige, pale green etc. I’m not suggesting what you choose but a paving that is difficult to clean is a right pain! Riven Sandstone in my garden Calibrated Sandstone My R13 Porcelain just after laying - looks a bit grubbier now!...See MoreGabby Wong
