How high can I build up around chimney pot?

I am self building an extension to our existing loft over the rear addition of our property. On the party wall I will be building along is a chimney stack with pots on top. Planning has been passed which approves the new roof height to come up the chimney pots, but I wanted to know if there are any regulations regarding how high up a pot you can brick? I have been advised that I can brick up around the pots in situ, but want to know if there is a clearance at the top of the pot that needs to be kept. The building is 1900s Victorian London terrace with clay pots. I want to make sure I can build up enough to have appropriate waterproofing onto flat roof.

to be honest ... sounds like a builder is required here. High up building work really isn’t a DIY project.

There are definitely building regs involved with chimneys which you'll need to check out from a reputable source such as the gov.uk pages. They will clearly layout the answer to this so all your hard work doesn't get set on fire!

If you're working on a tight budget, how about some little things now so it looks cheery to come home to while you decide what to spend your money on? You could get some colour out there with some pots, or hanging baskets maybe, without breaking the bank. What about some climbers? I lived in a house very like this as a kid, and my mum always had pots and baskets and honeysuckle on a trellis by the door (painted bright coral...), so it was always a riot of colour and really cheerful. Then take your time choosing a door and a colour you love, or planning a porch.

Thank you all. Apologies I'm not sure how to answer individually. I agree that the skirting board jutting out looks very strange, most rooms in the house have some 'interesting' design choices. Would you believe that the man who made these changes has now set up his own building company! The lamp on the left is from IKEA, I only bought it a few months ago so it should still be available. Unfortunately the lamp on the right is a flea market find so no idea where it came from. The second alcove is substantially smaller than the one with the bookcase currently in it. I'm just concerned that it may look 'unbalanced' with the built in shelves. I haven't managed to find pictures of rooms with alcoves differing in width. I do love the idea of built in shelves, it seems safer than our current bookcase and adding the storage underneath the last shelf would be helpful. I have found an original black cast iron Victorian fireplace with a width of 125cm versus the 140cm of the chimney. Would this work with the green wall? The room is painted in Breakfast Room Green and I've attached a photograph of the fireplace. Thank you for the suggestion about the mirror. This is the first time that the living room has been tidy enough to have the mirror against the chimney breast so it's helpful to have opinions on it's size. Thank you all again!

Thanks all! I really like the Serif, but I'm just not sure our living room allows for it. In addition, kids may be on the horizon so I think fear also plays a part! @Sarah U-S, thanks for the comment regarding the cable. I just see a video actually where the installer ran it behind a stud wall - however recommended not doing so for brick (our fireplace is plastered brick). That being said, we were thinking of doing something like the photo below, with cabinets built into the alcoves and perhaps even across the front of the chimney breast. Our thinking is that if the cupboards in front are kept very narrow it will not take too much space and we might be able to use the chimney opening to increase the depth a little. In this 'solution', we;d put The Frame sitting just above the cabinet at a sensible height, then pictures above say (as per @minnie101 's comment). The cable would presumably be able to run just a very short distance down into the cabinet, which wouldn't be so bad? Might even be able to hide it with a tiny ornament/plant in front...?

@Nicola M (Nicola) well we went to a new local tile shop the other day and she persuaded me to stick with the giant tiles, but still tiling them as brickwork effect. I saw an amazing concrete one that was a nice colour, wasn't patchy but was out of our budget (£40sqm)!! eek. My OH just said to order them as he knows how stressed I have been trying to find something I like, LOL. There were some other lovely ones but in the wrong shape ie 600's which I don't like on the wall personally. I haven't ordered them yet but they are typically special order so I my tiler is coming to measure today so I can be sure to have enough. Hence my questions about where to tile to as we are trying to save money, haha. I was going to do the floor as well so it all runs through but I think it will need some pattern/oomph in the room with all grey tiles. These are the ones in the Gris colour. Sounds like you have not sorted out a party wall agreement with your neighbour as this would already be agreed. Costly and painfully slow to sort if they get upset!

Hi guys,

Yes party wall agreement was costly and next door are very particular about things... It was mainly asked as party wall agrees to build up by three bricks layers, but gov.uk states 1m clearance from flat roof to top of pot, even though next door want a smoke test after which would clearly violate building regs. Just wanted to check if I missed something.

Have also been really enjoying getting hands on with this as local builders have left neighbours with leaks and party wall violations, which have cost them thousands to fix...
