Help living room dilemma

Hi
We are changing flooring down stairs of house.
We thinking of herringbone design.
So the dilemma is do we get rid of arch that is in the room see pics
It’s a big job as it’s a supporting wall, the bottom of living room to the french doors is narrower then where we have tv.
We need to make decision before flooring goes down.
If we got rid we could move sofa along so it’s more central and tv would be more centred, but distance between would be narrower.

How would we arrange furniture?
Or do we keep it as it is and just renew flooring ?

Any help/ ideas please

Do you need that extra sofa?

It almost looks like deleting it would solve your problem.

Would save you a lot of work and upheaval (and cost). 😊

Sharing a floor plan would probably help people here to help you.

I think you're not far off the look you want but, you're right, there are a few tweaks to tie it together. Mainly paint, so only a weekend, maybe two, depending on how handy you are with a brush! I would paint the black blue, and lose the gold frame moulding in the centre of the ceiling (it brings the ceiling down, visually). Love the blue chandelier, keep it! Is that a radiator to the right of the door? If yes, I'd paint it gold to match the skirting (it would also look more Victorian). If you have the budget, you could get it replaced with a vintage style cast iron radiator? They are quite expensive though, so maybe something to save up for down the line? I'd also paint the entry door blue, with a gold frame, to tie everything in together - I think the stark white block in the wall jars with the rest of the room. As per other contributors to this thread, I agree that you need a rug, ideally a dark coloured Kilim or Turkish style rug, going by your inspiration photos. IKEA do some that are very affordable, but you could splash out on a handmade one. If you can find a battered and worn secondhand one, I think would look awesome, it would give you that lived in Victorian look? Finally, the chairs and table are cool, and the colours work for me, but the table is way to small for the space. Perversely, I think it actually makes the room look smaller? I would switch to a six seater, and turn it 90 degrees to how you have it at the moment (pointing toward the fireplace). It does look awesome, and do please keep us posted!

Hello. I've been reading about rugs and allergies and decided to have a go with either jute or polypropylene rug, which should be fine in my circumstances. For the walls you can look at a light grey. Perhaps Ammonite by F&B But you really have to test out some colours. I suggest getting the paper paint swatches and see what works in the room, with the carpet (or a sample of the carpet). Then get testers of a couple of colours that look good enough to try out. Some greys have a red undertone, some a blue, some a green. You don't want them to clash. Depending on which way the room faces, the colours change too. You can post more pics if you have trouble deciding.

This isn’t the fault of the furniture designers, just a combo of the new games hardware growing ever bigger (were in small PC tower territory now) and the obscure (horrific IMO) design choice making it look like some type of spaceship that simply won’t work in the majority of homes.

Thank you E.D , the small sofa was put there as it was just an empty space if we remove it again it just looks empty , if that makes sense.

I looks like you've just put it there to fill a space. I think it's best to treat as 2 zones. 2 armchairs looking out the doors would have been better.

Or move one of the units from the wall and put sofa there as another area to sit and enjoy the view?

I hadn’t thought of 2 zones I have been fixated on bringing it together as one , and it never looking quite right,
Hence thinking of removing arch x

Hi Sharon,

I like the idea of herringbone. But I don't believe the arch/flooring decision need to be related.
It's a modern looking arch not the 'traditoonal 90s' one so looks fine.

I agree with Ellie to treat the rooms as two and have armchairs to enjoy the garden view.

Re curtains...is the blue on the dresser wall the same blue as the one on fireplace wall please? Can't quite tell from pics...

Yes, I can’t really see a great benefit to getting rid of the arch. Especially since it’s an aesthetically pleasing one.

‘Broken plan‘ is sometimes better than ‘open plan’. 🙂

Thank you for comments, the reason why arch/flooring are related is because we need to make decision about arch before flooring
The blue on walls is same colour just looks different in the light.
I have not heard “broken plan” before but can see the concept

The arch is lovely. Not one of those awful 80s ones that everyone had (well not me!). Keep the arch and turn the second room into another sitting room/dining room/study or whatever you want. Your sitting room is lovely. You have very good taste.

Thank you Sonia , seems the consensus is to keep arch, which will save a lot of money and effort.
Just need to think what to do with it now 😊
I think further seating as that small couch often gets dragged to sitting area when we have guests !
That’s a distant memory due to lockdown 😂

Thank you everyone for in put , we have decided to keep arch as it is so this week we getting new flooring fitted throughout downstairs.
