Kitchen layout

Would like some help with figuring the best kitchen layout. We are having an extension built on the back of house. With two windows in the kitchen, it makes things a bit awkward. At the minutes this is what we will be having 3 tall units at the back (fridge/freezer, oven& microwave and larder) and base cabinets on the sides. Would love to have an island but I’m worried on these drawings it is too far from the rest of the kitchen especially since the hob is gonna be on island. I don’t want to be doing miles in my kitchen. Or does a peninsula fit better. Also an extractor hood, Will it block my sight lines? This is very important as I have 3 year old twins and need to keep my eye on them. We had a small galley kitchen before and now with all this space, I just don’t know what to do with it,

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I think the gap between the island and the cupboards isn’t big enough to get through, I think passages in kitchens should be min 1m and it doesn’t look that wide? I also think the island is too far away from the rest of the kitchen. I think a peninsula would be better.

Rotate island 90 degrees anticlockwise, then you can be cooking in kitchen and see what's going on elsewhere. Also if you had stools on island they would be looking out to garden.

An L shaped design sounds fine to me and I think it's practicality will outweigh concerns about it dominating. I agree a soft white is nicer in an older property and a more modern look than gloss but I don't agree that a painted finish is better with young ones as it can chip- I would look for a laminate door which despite being perceived to be lower quality will likely stand up to rough treatment

I have a similar layout on a project I did recently, take a look at my page with Rogers-Bexhill there is a large L-Shape with Island and the door is situated in a similar position. I said 'other' because regardless of what I like the best, it's all down to the specific space you're dealing with. I love the galley kitchen in the first image because it's designed perfectly for the space - but I wouldn't want a galley kitchen myself, unless I have a property similar to the one in the photo. Same with islands - great if you have the space and sometimes they work with a single wall, L-Shape or U-Shape, but don't shoehorn one in if it just won't fit. The room, the space, the outlook and how you use it will best determine what's the best type of kitchen in that particular circumstance.

I think that you need to leave a wider gap, 30cm is not wide and I think it will look like what it is, ie stopping the units so they don't get in the way of the french doors. I would go with a 60-80cm gap and make a useful feature out of it with floor to ceiling shelving. I've found a picture showing some shelving stepped back from regular depth units, so you get an idea. Another option is to use a rounded base unit if you like them and maybe put a stool or plant in the gap.

Could you swap your dining room to be the lounge so that your new dining room adjoins the kitchen thereby having no need for a dining set in the actual kitchen but perhaps a sofa instead to make it more sociable?

Hi Daisy, drawing is a bit outdated now as the dining room is now a snug.

Thanks Ellie&jonathan, I hadn’t thought of that but the L-shape with the island looks so much better

Please find attached an alternate option for your consideration. Please note that I have made the front room into a cosy room and move the dining room into the middle area. I have also played around with the kitchen and created a large second seating room facing the garden.
