Hi all,
I'm using denim drift (dulux) as a feature wall in my living room.
I'm looking for greys to go on the other walls but there is so many and not sure which grey would look best also... looking for a grey carpet to go with it all any suggestions on what greys would look nice with it.
I have trouble visualizing it so any photos or names of carpet/paint would be useful.
Thanks all. colour attached is denim drift. also we have a south facing living room.

Every paint colour belongs to an identifiable Hue Family.

Paint colours can be measured & plotted into their respective Hue Families. This includes not only the more saturated colours, but all blacks/whites/greys too.

Choosing a grey from the same Hue Family as Denim Drift creates a classic monochromatic pairing. Denim Drift sits at 245° in the Blue Hue Family. The 2 Benjamin Moore greys below are in the same Hue Family neighbourhood - so are closely related.

They are lovely in their own right, but you still may find them greyed blues.

An alternative pairing is to take greys from the Green-Yellow Hue Family. Greys from there are often considered by many as more neutral in appearance. BUT low Chroma (near neutrals) from this neighbourhood can surprisingly also shift blue in imbalanced light.

It doesn’t happen in every situation.

This makes it always important to check colours in your space to see how they behave.

Carpets too can be measured. Choosing a grey carpet from one of these two Hue Families would keep your palette cohesive.

You can measure any surface (apart from glass/metal/high shine) yourself, to plot into its Hue Family. You just need a Vario Color Muse - approx £55 on Amazon.

Good colour combinations for house?

Hello I was just wondering if there are any sources to use that show what colours work well as a combination. I need to paint my bedrooms, hallway and living area and I have chosen some colours, but for the living room hallway I wanted to use two different colours for different walls (for the hallway the landing wall will be different to the side walls). Is there a source online that can advise what colour combos go well? Also for the ceiling for all the rooms, is white usually always the best colour to go with? For smaller rooms, is there any specific colours that are best? I have chosen denim drift for the small bedroom so far and tranquil dawn for the large bedroom. These are dulux colours. I was advised by a friend to buy even better quality thick paint from johnstons as the thicker paint will make any uneven parts of the wall less obvious. Is there a way to colour match dulux colours with other brands that do thicker paint?

I would go with Polished Pebble. It’s softer. My friend has it teamed with a pretty yellow and green wallpaper and it looks great. I know nothing about bulbs, but I think any room is cosied up by table lamps and floor lamps and I have a lamp in each corner. A floor lamp is always great peering over a sofa. Creates a very cosy feel at night, in fact I never use the overhead light! Here’s some images, but I’m not sure of your decor style.

Thank you so much. I need to see what the colour match equivalent is to the Benjamin Moore middle grey one is. so to be a pain but is polished pebble or goose down similar in the tones? I'm still new to this and trying to learn so please excuse my ignorance

You aren’t ignorant! Paint companies don’t make this useful data easy to find.

thank you so much. I'm trying to stick with dulux as I'm getting confused haha. all I know for sure is denim drift is a feature wall. just trying to get something that goes with it and that will go with a light ish grey carpet something along the lines of this carpet sample. I really appreciate your time and help

My friend has polished pebble to go with a pretty flowery yellow and grey wallpaper feature wall and it looks lovely. It’s quite pale and gentle. Here’s a couple of pics, not her room, although you may have already seen these!

There is no close match to Gray Timber Wolf but In Johnstone’s paint there is 2005-R80B which is somewhat similar.

Polished Pebble is 00NN 72/000 it sits at 107.26° towards the end of the Yellow Hue Family. It is very similar in Value (lightness) to Bunny Gray.

oh I have some old paint testers in Johnstones grey fox and feather grey I think they are called. So am I right in thinking polished pebble is to far out as denim drift is 245? not sure on the johnstone's they do have a number on them.

so I would need something close to gray timber for it to match? I'll see if I can find the paint colour that is 2005-R8OB

Polished Pebble is still worth getting a large paint chip or sample.

It has a very low Chroma making it a very near neutral grey anyway. It has a lightness value of 86 and Denim Drift has a lightness value of 61. So Denim Drift is 20 points darker than Polished Pebble.

If you find it too light, then you are looking for a colour higher in value than 61 but lower than 86.

A Monochromatic palette - sticking to the Blue Hue Family is just a straightforward way to go. (Gray Timber Wolf)

A Diad Palette - Blue + Green-Yellow Hue Family is another simple way of creating harmony.

Analogous - is picking colours from a neighbouring Hue Family to Denim Drift. They are good neighbours.

Another colour from Johnstones is S 2002-B which sits at. 220° in the Blue Hue Family.

It has a lightness value of 78. It sits between Denim Drift and Polished Pebble in terms of lightness.

2502-B is a Natural Color System Colour. This is Johnstone’s colour palette system.

sorry I meant the names of the grey you've mentioned in thread as I cant seem to find details of the number system to what name colour the paint is

Sorry - if I have only given the number, that is all the detail I have. Johnstone’s Paint centres can find you the paint chips for those NCS paint numbers.

Range = NCS 1950

Colour = S 2005-R80B

Range = NCS 1950

Colour = S 2005-R90B

Range = NCS 1950

Colour = S 2002-B

Range = NCS 1950

Colour = S 2502-B

I hope it gets you a little farther. If you find something & like it but its that bit too, dark/light/blue/grey etc we can alter the data to find the nearest match available.

ok I've just bought this sofa to go with my feature wall so was hoping I could get a colour recommendation for the colour of my other 3 walls. i cant get to a paint shop now as i was planning and cant find anything on internet about numbers of colour suggested so was really hoping for some names of paint preferably in dulux/crown as they seem to be more in my budget, then I can order online. I've got some of the samples come through but I cant seem to see the undertones in any light properly, it's my eyesight, need to get eyes tested. would you be able to help.
