Georgian style house canopy / porch help

Hi everyone,
Our house has a Georgian style front canopy with pillars. Parts of the house are old (were unsure of exact date) and whilst were very keen to keep all the period features and love the look of the house, we can’t help but feel the porch looks oversized and the pillars look quite obviously unoriginal. We’ve debated for a while whether to remove the pillars and replace with another Georgian style porch for a little while but not really looked into it in detail. However we’re going to be getting the house repainted soon and think if the porch is being altered then it’s got to be done at the same time.
We’re siding towards a similar flat canopy but a bit smaller and with no pillars, being supported by “brackets” (for want of a better word!) like the photo of the brick house below.

Would be very grateful for anyone’s opinion?!

Personally I like the current porch. I think the front door is undersized though- you don’t notice it with the imposing porch but I think it might be noticeable with a smaller porch

I’d be inclined to keep the existing porch but to put some trim/moulding on the canopy to make it more decorative.
I’d also consider switching windows on your bay to more traditional ones.

Puffinrock, first of all congratulations on getting through to the last stage! Most of all - a 1915 house is wonderful - so much style! I definitely think your plans would be great - a slightly pitched canopy - to direct rainfall - can be very helpful. Dependent on your style you could also add a lattice trellis side next to each timber for a more English cottage look (then later work in a rambling rose or wisteria or honeysuckle. Without the trellis is more modern, guessing by your front door, perhaps pared down and you can decide whether to paint the timber. Please post after shots! Hope this is helpful. We are about to do the exact same thing for a client. Try to bring the canopy out as much as possible without it looking disproportionate so that you can shelter and remove boots and shoes etc without getting wet in rain or snow. Good luck x

Dear Catherine, congrats on your new home. Regarding your questions: It really depends on what kind of style you are looking for (modern, traditional, scandi-look...). Personally, I would suggest to either keep the walls white (or maybe grey) and add some vibrant colours by choosing statement furniture/ accessoires pieces (that would look lovely to the wooden floor as well). Maybe something like the below - there's a few different ideas depending on the style of the room. You should probably decide whether you want to draw attention to the light, or whether it should just blend in and sit nicely with the rest of the room? Hope this helps! Yeah it's tricky without removing the existing and starting from scratch. I agree 88wj88, that's how it feels to me too. I'm not overly keen on the super modern things, I prefer classic styles but appreciate the feedback and suggestions. The oak is definitely beautiful. Yes, I think you should probably try to embrace it.

At the moment it looks a little ‘lost’, I feel a path leading up to it may go some way to give it more purpose.

And yes, ‘dress it up’ a little.

i really like the porch as it sets off the house. I agree the door is a bit lost and would put some well made architrave round it and paint it all a slightly brighter colour or even white, so it stands out more. Period houses often had doors that were half glass, which you might might be able to do with your current door and then set off with a pair of lights/lanterns it will all look more important.
