Choosing a wood floor colour

We are redeveloping our ground floor. We will have a large open plan space with a modern kitchen.

We want to have wood flooring throughout, however we have rooms with antique wood furniture in oak, walnut and mahogany tones. Images online always show ultra modern furniture.

Opinions and pictures would be lovely to help us with this dilemma.

Have you considered polished concrete floor if you are so keen on a grey floor? With tile/concrete floor, you might want to consider underfloor heating though. Alternatively, Jordan Andrews supply a whole range of different timber tones and will have a range of greys as well if you check out their website.

Since you have ruled out 3 I would choose the browny one top of pic one. The grey is nice but grey does not go with the cream tiles.

Hi Clare,

There are specific names for flooring colour, stains or paints - each manufacture chooses their own names to call each product they produce. This might help you to get the right look and match. Print out the pictures you like and take them with you to the flooring store or look online. Order or pick up some samples of the flooring that are close to the pictures you like. Then in your home, hold the samples up to your different wood furniture items just to make sure none clash. The one that goes with the most items you have and looks good to your eye in your space is the one you should choose. You can always ask others' opinions once you have your sample selections narrowed down.

I agree with Artistic, each company names their flooring colours differently. You definitely need to visit several flooring companies, get an idea of what you like and collect samples to take home and look at for a few days. Pick out the ones you like and return the ones you don’t. I’m doing this at the moment for my patio and I have tiles everywhere, but we’ve made a choice. Don’t rely just on pictures. Are you familiar with Pinterest? It’s a great place to search for images and you can save the pictures and create mood boards and a great place to start.
