Hi Emily,

A few things to consider:
- The wood of the bed clashes with the wood of the side table and bookcase. Mixing woods is a good thing, but when they clash, especially when they will be sitting right next to each other - this will not work well. You may need to change one or the other.
- At the moment (except for the bed wood) all your colours are very cold. You need to use warm and cool colours together (unless all neutrals) to make your room more comfortable and inviting to live in.
- If you want to go with the dark blue carpet, may I suggest neutral colour walls (a cream, light grey or taupe maybe - warmer tones). Then add the wall colour to your room in your bedding (white or cream sheets & duvet) with an accent blanket folded across the bottom of the bed (pulled up and used in cold weather) & throw cushions to bring in your chosen colours with a print(s) - the lighter blue with the darker navy.
- Lastly, you can use the previous wall colour (the mid blue) for your curtains (stripes, solid or a small print possibly).

Thanks for replying. Thanks for the ideas. I forgot to mention the photo of the bed makes the colour look to orange, it’s more like the rest of the oak in the room. I will be adding warmer tones through my bedding and soft furnishing (I should‘ve put that in).

Your bedroom sounds pretty. I think with matching wallpaper and bed cover, why not try some floor to ceiling length white sheers with a white block out blind underneath for privacy. Maybe some silver and white gold and white patterned cushions for the bed.

It’s hard to advise without pictures as we do need to see what style furniture you have and a pic of the rug would be good. However, I personally would choose curtains of a similar colour to your walls. They will then be less in your face. I’m never keen on colourful curtains that shout at you, and red can be really domineering. I have a red Persian rug and my curtains are a faded cream with a tiniest hint of faded red, but I wish they were plainer. You can then choose cushions and artwork that will bring in the red of your Afghan rug into the room. I tried to find some inspirational pics but I couldn’t find grey walls with an Afghan run, sorry.

I would also go for white bedding but with a bold pattern. For curtains I'd also go for linen, maybe something like the bed head to break up the walls a bit.. I liked this bedside cabinet from John Lewis (2nd pic) but it seemed to clash with the headboard but maybe you can find similar or cheaper ones like I've shown that you can paint in the same navy. I thought a pendant swagged over the bed could look nice? Perhaps add a brass mirror/s between the door and radiator?

Hi Emily,

Sounds good. If you go with the blue colour for the walls, then you can always match your curtains to your wall colour - a monochomatic trick that is classic and timeless. Otherwise a contrast which will tie in with your bedding or a neutral would be best considering your wall and carpet colours.

Making the most of your bedroom curtains: install your curtain pole high - even up to the ceiling, and make sure your curtains go to the floor. This will give good impact and makes everything look more opulent. And to make your bedroom dark for better sleep, use blackout lining & extend your curtain width (where the fabric falls) out 6" (15cm) on each side of your window so the light doesn't peep through.

I’d match the curtains to the carpet colour and then look for some accessories (cushions, pictures, throws) that also include these colours and the colours of your walls etc. However, I am by no means an expert!

Have you got all the furniture and carpet etc? If so it's easier just to take a pic of the room as colours do look really different in one space compared to another.

A picture of the room is much easier for us to envisage it. However, with curtains I think match them with your wall colour, so they almost blend it. Doesn’t have to be an exact match but similar tone. That way they don’t fight with the rest of the room.
