what to put on here?

Hello
we are in the final stages of finishing our house but have got stuck on what to put on the flat roof section of the house as walling?
we have thought about render? concrete effect tiles? split face walling?
does anyone have any good ideas?
the front of the house is hamstone, and we have red brick and cedar cladding....what other material would match in?
sorry please excuse the paddling pool mess!!

any help would be appreciated. thankyou.

That cedar cladding is beautiful. I would carry on with that across the grey portion. Wouldn’t a third material look a bit of a mishmash?

You can train Garrya elliptica as a wall shrub, ditto Rhamnus alaternus variegatus - they both perform really well in the shade and make a great backdrop for other plants. Osmanthus heterophyllus is one of my favourite shrubs for shade, as is Daphne odora variegata. For some early scent try Sarcococca and Viburnum bodnantense 'Charles Lamont'. For softening the edges there is nothing better in dry shade than Epimedium (loads of different varieties, but my favourite is Frohnleiten). Tellima grandiflora is another fantastic plant for dry shade. If it's not too shady you'll also get some of the herbaceous geraniums (Rozanne is a good long-flowering one) to survive. Other people have mentioned ferns, but they really like moisture, however, Dryopteris erythrosora and Polystichum setiferum will both take a bit of dry shade. Pulmonaria, Tiarella and Brunnera 'Jack Frost' also like to be in the shade and work very well as part of a naturalistic scheme. One of my favourite climbers for shade is Vitis coignetaie, it will grow in deep shade and gives fantastic autumn colour. You can also use Clematis armandii, but it can get a bit too vigorous.

An awkward spot that is a visually important part of the house. I think the idea of an Acer is a good one, once planted it will become the main focus and should be up lot of possible. I would then look to plant an intricate ground cover mix of slightly more shade tolerant perennials including: Hellebores Hardy geranium Tellima Heuchera Gillenia Lamium Spring bulbs would help to prolong the interest with early flower colour, while the evergreen hellebores and buxus aempervirens (box) would create winter structure

Looks like a nice space -I could easily relax in your lovely corner sofa! Personally, 1. I would add rattan chair - natural colour, you have loads of cushions so 1 or 2 on the rattan chair would tie in with your scheme. 2. The pictures above the sofa could be moved to the left to line up more against the end of the sofa. 3. The lamp on the white table - try to find something much bigger - relative to the sofa it appears very small. The main thing is not to sweat too much - rooms devolve and part of the fun/enjoyment is finding things that you like.

I don’t think it will look odd having a bench there. I went for a smaller bench so you could add a plant. I should say some of my choices were based on my photoshopping ability! If you’re going for black and white I’d vary the texture and tone.

thankyou. yes this is something we had also considered. would you think vertical cedar cladding would look ok? or horizontal to match the other?
yes we do have a lot of different materials....down to the planning office!!

For me I would keep it the same. I found a couple of images and that’s what they have done. Of course it’s your home so follow your heart.

I quite like its current ‘black box’ effect.

Dark grey zinc cladding can look good in the right setting.

I’d be tempted to go for the same slate as whats on the main roof - blue/black as a strong statement... but I can see that basically as long as it links with one of the other areas on this build, you really can’t go wrong ! It’s a lovely job!!

I agree with E D, the black/anthracite looks great. And I like the idea of zinc. But render would be nice too. I thought you might like to see it rendered in a light colour, so here you go...

And same colour as the lintels above the windows

I agree that if you introduce another material then try to pick a colour that matches elsewhere.
Render will likely compliment the patio you are are likely planning.
One alternative is a porcelain tile or ultra compact surface such as Dekton.

Another vote for a black slate (or slate effect) to tie in with the roof.
Its looking lovely so far!

thanks for all the replies. great help. looks like we will probably go for something grey/black, as you say to match the roof and windows. Adding another colour would look too much. thanks all!
