Where to possibly put a tv in new extension

Hi All,

we are in the middle of our build and thinking of putting a tv in on the wall(previously were not going to).Our dilemma is where should we put it as the old dining room is slightly darker or in the new extension where the roof light may cause reflection and make it difficult to watch.

my other question is it possible to have a tv without An aerial.Not keen on running an aerial down the outside of the house

So, what is this new space? Is it just living/dining? If so, I'd first decide where I am putting my furniture/sofas etc. Post a floorplan if you need help. Eg you might have 2 sofas opposite by the fireplace, coffee table in middle, TV opposite the fireplace? That's how I have my living room. Do you want it to be more permanent on a wall... it's just that you said you weren't going to have a tv... maybe just have one on a stand then if you decide you don't actually want a TV in there you can just move it.

Ours isn’t connected to the aerial, but it’s connected to the satellite.

It’s on a full swivel and tilt bracket, we get reflection from the sun and from ceiling lights, but it’s not a problem because the angle can be adjusted, but we have no extension. The lad down the road put his on the wall where the existing room was joined to the new extension, which was great for all 30 of us watching the rugby👍

And hide the cable in the ceiling ( he was going to suspend it from the ceiling at one point.)

yes, it would in terms of size. My concern is that all the sitting area then would end up oriented towards that area, and the room might look weird or asymmetrical...? I am enclosing a few more picture of the fireplace area seen from the front, so that you can judge better. The other alternative that comes to mind would be to make the fireplace wall a bit wider, so that it fits the TV above... do you think that´s possible? Thanks so much!

Hello Maria, It's an interesting room actually and firstly my suggestion is to paint the orange white as a base. You can then gauge light levels more easily which would then inform you as to how to treat the room. Removing the balustrade completely opens the room as the steps and split level arrangement can still denote separation.. Which you can use accordingly either by situating sofa or perhaps a console and then sofa or even just a console or low cabinet here with something decorative on it.. ... Viewing the back of a sofa or low piece with something lovely like a vase and floral arrangement or something decorative is a rather nice way to introduce if you like, another area of a room and give it a sleeker form of separation if that is required.. I also rather like the idea of having a more open split level arrangement.... Perhaps consider a fire that you can use.. Look into flueless fires as an alternative.. OR possibly even a small black wood burning stove with a twin wall flue. There are options you can research and look into which I think could be nice.. Store a pile of logs underneath the space is ideal. If you want to lighten the floor consider rugs and other layers here that can really be used as a basis for your design.. Placing the sofa facing the fireplace is really an idea focal point.. with armchair opposite angled towards the sofa and fireplace.. It could be a 3 seater with a matching square foot stool which you can sit at one end to create a chaise longue arrangement for something less formal.. Another idea I like is to have again a sofa facing the fireplace and then possibly two chairs with a small table in between at the side with their backs to the sliding door, but in a way that means they don't block the view or flow of the room.. Try things out and see what works for you and the room... You want to keep flow through the space and decorate as 1 space even if the rooms are functioning separately.. Layering colour is an ideal way to decorate and add texture. Situating a flat screen in a cabinet is a nice way to hide the tv as it's not what you want people to focus on when they come to your home.. So perhaps take out the shelving entirely in favour of a cabinet that could house the screen when you want to watch a film etc. There are really some fantastic elements to your new home- the rads are fantastic and I do like the fireplace.. I think you could make this fabulous.. Add textural and warm coloured elements to the sofa arms etc.. I can see earthy and warm tones with rich luxuriant additions.. such as cushions, throws and large floral arrangements for coffee table or side tables to add interest and finish the space .... :))

Thanks so much everyone, it's been great to read the ideas. Eletyadams - what a fantastic unit - this is the sort of style I love and think would fit in with the decor and style of the property. I wonder whether it would work in a soft white to match the dado and not clash with the oak flooring? Firtreecottage - I agree something not fixed would be better. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these detailed plans. You have certainly come up with some ideas that we had not thought about. In particular we wouldn't have thought about having a small sofa against that wall (we had thought the tv would be good here) but actually I think it feels nice to be facing the other way. I also like the piano and the bookcase being at the entrance and feels this would help separate the kitchen from the family room area and also be that I can hear my daughter play whilst I cook and pop round the corner to see her. We have only just created that large opening for the window as wanted as much sun in as possible (and in fact have just had it amended to make it larger so it didn't look so obviously like a garage conversion to us) - so I wouldn't be keen on the second idea of reducing the window size for the piano - but yes you are absolutely correct and we should have thought about furniture placement more than we did as the 15cm of wall to the left of the window has prevented me from running a nice long floor to ceiling bookcase along that wall which is disappointing - but still other areas to put it in. Luckily I can carry out your furniture arrangement as I placed 3 tv points so will see how it feels when we finally get finished. Thank you so much for these plans and the effort to achieve them!
