1930’s fireplace- should we replace?
In our back living space we have this fireplace. Very much 70s look- not really my style! We’d love to get a classic 1930s on in its place but unsure how feasible it would be and how big of a job it is.
Any help, tips or advice would be massively appreciated!

3 years agoAs it currently stands, it looks non-functional. The firebox is very small. I'd look into refacing it to remove the angled look, then changing the opening to fit a built-in gas unit. Not a cheap date, but will be a vast improvement.

1930's House facelift help please
Comments (29)Hey So the latest update is that we're still busy with the project but in the closing stages. We've done a lot of work inside more than originally planned we've gutted the house and replaced everything and changed the floor plan to modernise it and make more of an open plan space downstairs. We've done the rear extension which is now dedicated to kitchen with a central island running parallel with the doors . Comments (11)I'd say keep it and dress the fireplace and hearth with logs. If you feel it's too dark you could consider painting the wooden surround. Sadly IMO too many people rip out original features - not only removing the character /interest of the room, but de-valuing their home. Comments (22)Just so you know, these parts are made on a tool called s spindle;e (small scale manufacturing). if you really really want to get the shape "just so" the supplier will be able to have a profile made for you, a new profile blade for a spindle machine will cost between £200 and £300. 3 years agoOh dear it’s certainly a one off. When I had my fireplace opened out I did get a builder to check what we could and couldn’t remove and then did it ourselves. We actually installed a Victorian style fire surround because I like the look. By 1930s you don’t mean those brown tiled ones? Please don’t lol 😂 This is my replacement

3 years agoNo I would love something like that in place! Maybe a builder would be best to figure out what is feasible. Did you have something similar to ours before?

3 years agoVery nice. Some 1930s houses had this sort of thing which we removed. It was grim!
My mum had fireplaces like your wish one and her house was 1911. They were metal but so pretty.
