Front yard advice wanted please!

Sorry the photos are a bit naff! I’m looking for ideas of what I can do with my front yard. Currently, we have a parcel box, 3 flower pots with artificial flowers under the window & a trellis next to the door with artificial flowers also. It just seems like a wasted area but I do live on a busy-ish road so a table and chairs is not very private! Perhaps stencil the step? Paint the door? Unsure how to jazz it up & utilise the space. Thank you!

Hi Kara, hmmm it needs plants. How do you feel about removing some of the block paving around the edges to create planting pockets? You could create a border at the front, to the left and under the front of the house, then fill it with planting. If thats too much, just remove some of it, mix in some compost with the soil to create a good start for any plants. You could plant lavender if it’s a sunny spot, Hebes are nice small shrubs, there’s loads you could plant. A climbing rose by the front door would look amazing. These pics show what I mean.

I’ve seen my neighbours gardens like this however I’d have no idea how to lift up some paving? Would I need a professional to do this? No idea how to begin cutting them out? I love the idea of lavender! Thank you!

It looks a very good start. Now think about adding more interest to the gravel, perhaps by interspersing the 'lollipop trees' with neat but interesting shrubs. These could be scented such as Sarcoccoca (winter scent), Daphne odora (spring scent)... And adding a border in front of the house with appropriate plants. I would need to now the orientation of the garden and whether the soil is alkaline/acid/neutral and clay/loam/sand/chalk before recommending plants. If you do not need to park a vehicle in front of the house, and with the right soil and aspect you could add a rectangular herb garden.

Agree about leaving ceiling white, although understand your husbands thoughts as can look fantastic coloured, but just not in the hallway. Have you decided on wall colour? I'm in love with Pale Hound by Farrow and Ball, having just used it in my hall stairs and landing. We used just large white ball ceiling lights, which we got from Habitat. Home base is a surprisingly good source too! Perhaps husband can choose some brightly coloured ones?!

Rachel and Carolina, thank you both so much for taking some of your time to think and design those sketches, it has really helped me in a stage I was blocked in my project. I now can keep on moving forward, that's so great. Carolina, I like your designs and they are actually similar to the sketches I was doing before I imported the soil in the garden but I think at this stage, following the natural curves of the garden will be much easier for me. I really like a lot of ideas you emitted. I will indeed add a birdbath somewhere and possibly a mini pond :-D Rachel, you just put into words and sketch a vague idea that I had but that I didn't know how to formulate! you basically read my mind. yes, I noticed there was some natural lines, and I wanted something more in curves but I didn't know how. your design makes it all look possible and realistic. to answer your questions, the round things are wine bottles. I was thinking of adding more wine bottles for edging but they might be a bit too short for high enough raised beds. I'll have to think about it... yes, the silver planter is a dolly tub. I was thinking of planting a clematis in it and some colourful flowers at the base of the clematis. I thought it would look nice somewhere against the white wall... thank you both so much about your ideas. I'll send you an update when it's more advanced. (it might take a long time though, but I'll get there!)

Hi, Aluminium is a great material for front doors as not only is it an environmentally friendly alternative to UPVC it's also guaranteed to last far longer. Block paving is usually laid on sand, so easy to lift. Go to a corner and see if you can lift one (use a metal crow bar if you have one) then the rest should follow. The bricks are small so shouldn’t be too difficult and no cutting required. No need for a professional! I just pray someone hasn’t cemented them in 🙏 😊
