NE FACING GARDEN SUN

I have been to look at a house and fell in love with it and the only thing that is letting it down is that the garden is North East facing. The garden is 45 meters long and has nothing to either side and nothing at the bottom of the garden.

how much sun would we get?

You'll get loads of sun. If you look at the aerial map, the satellite pic, you'll see that the garden is bathing in the sun. Judging by the shadow of the trees, that photo was taken in the morning (north is at the top of the screen). The sun will be travelling clockwise around the house, so the patio will be in the shade of the house somewhere in the afternoon. I wouldn't let that keep me from buying the house. It looks like a lovely location.

Before you buy, go and look at the house at different times of the day if you can.

Start with your budget, what is it? Make a plan, gardening is not an overnight transformation, it takes time but that for many of us is the sheer joy of it. A year of all around plant interest is possible in time. I would spend my budget on getting the basics in place, so decide what you want e.g. do you want a patio and large beds and no grass, or some grass? If your local college has an agricultural course running they might be willing to help you as the students would learn a lot here, maybe ask? What is your soil type e.g. is it heavy clay or sandy? Is it acidic, alkaline or neutral, these facts are deciding factors on whether or not plants will thrive. Look at what plants are thriving in your local area that is a good guide to your soil, e.g. if there are lots of rhododendrons thriving near by then the soil will be acidic. If it were me, I would get it all dug up, lay a patio, add large beds (put in lots of fine bark compost), and no grass, just gravel. Work with your site, right plant right place is a mantra for a very good reason (!), there is no point planting sun loving plants if you get little sun so do your research on plants that thrive in shade, one good website is Plantsforshade. I would add lots of trellis to grow climbers as they will give you height and trick the eye into making your garden appear bigger, climbing hydrangeas, star jasmine ( for scent) some roses but choose carefully. Now draw up a year's plan so you can start planting for all year round colour, take your time and it's not daunting. Add attractive tubs (often on sale on our local Facebook!) and and plant appropriate annuals, there is loads of advice on line. Best of luck.

We're building a Passive house and are debating about brise soleil at the moment to shade the downstairs rooms. We live in Cumbria so similar to you it's only going to be necessary for 2-3 months a year, so nothing too intrusive/ugly. There are some good examples out there, but it's about knowing what to look for. You might find that it doesn't need to be as wide as you think - only enough to block the sun at its highest couple of hours in the day, and then in winter when the sun is lower you still get the light in

Hi snthouse. I drew up a couple of ideas earlier. Not to scale or anything and I’m no garden designer but it’s a hobby of mine and hope it gives you some ideas. Just noticed your drawing, I thought it might have been a bit squarer in the corner (hard to judge from photos) but I think you can adapt to suit. Main objective was to provide privacy whilst still letting light through and one solution to this could be by using screening. This could either be with plants/ trees ( might be too bushy/ take up space) or using a structural element which is partially open for light. I’ll post some ideas for screen ideas in next comment but here are my sketches. If you’re wondering what something is then let me know (I just have these visions in my head 🙂.)

We’ve created a wildflower area on a slope in our north east facing garden this summer. We were astonished by how well it has grown - lots of lovely flowers, loads of colour (we are definitely NOT green fingered)! However we sowed a special wildflower seed mix on new, bare topsoil at the same time as grass seed went down so we think it probably established quickly because the flower seeds weren’t fighting with established grass. So worth rotavating or whatever before you sow. I don’t yet know how messy it’s going to look once the flowers have gone. I think we’ll mow at that point. We have already mown a very specific, sharp line around the edge of the area so that it looks intentional rather than unkempt…. I think there can be a fine line with wild areas. Not sure I’d do it in a front garden. Also our NE facing garden gets sun until early afternoon. Not sure how many hours of sun you need but think you can get specific seed mixes for shadier areas.
