Removing black spot on pavers next to grass

Hi, can anyone advise how they'd remove black and white spots, which I gather are a type of lichen, from pavers round our house, when they're surrounded by grass and plants? I've scrubbed a few with a metal brush (see photos), so that does work a bit, but it's painstaking. Any advice?

Black spot remover for artificial stone available from garden centres or diy stores, expensive but does an excellent job.

Thanks, but I've only seemed to see ones that would kill the grass and plants. Would the ones you're thinking of not do that?

Thanks ever so much, both. Jonathan, you are absolutely right to point out the safety concern regarding the microwave's current position. Once I have replaced the microwave, I will definitely rehome it to a less dangerous place! Thanks also for the sharing the caveat about the pantry shelving potentially looking improvised. What about if I put something like a Welsh dresser type wall unit on that wall to the right of the window instead? I think the gangway is wide enough - it's nearly 1.2m in width (although the photos don't really convey that). Bookworm, it had not occurred to me to remove the cupboard doors of the under-counter unit - I absolutely love this idea! That way, there would be good access to the content of the unit even if there was a step ladder up against the coal store. And just like you suggest in your post, I would really like to keep the work surface as clear as possible, too (apart from (I think) the upright mixer or, as you say, a fruit bowl), so I do need to work out where the utensils ought really to live. I'm therefore going to have a look now to see what's out there by way of super-narrow hostess trolleys...! I've also just had a really long, hard stare at the space again (my husband thinks I have lost my mind). I can totally understand why someone might want to block up the storage above the coal store and then divide the pantry from the kitchen with a door - doing that would definitely achieve the clear kitchen/pantry distinction that I'm striving for. However, I think the main reasons for my instinct being not to do that are (a) a concern that an unwanted side-effect might be a perceived decrease in the size and airiness of the kitchen generally and (b) a desire to maximise the flow of natural light into what is actually a fairly dark room. And what about decor - would you decorate the pantry space in the same scheme as the kitchen, or do you think doing something a bit different might help distinguish it from the kitchen?

I laid my own last year. Like others, I also put sub-base down first (on top of levelled ground), compacted it (hired a machine), ensured it was level, laid sand over the top, then a good weed-proof membrane on top of that. I used one large section (to save gluing), tagged edges into the ground (around perimeter of the grass), then 'dressed' it with sharp/fine sand (many neglect this but it helps prevent flattening of the grass) -- do this when dry of course. The kids love it and, they don't get muddy! The only maintenance I've had to do so far is sweep leaves up. The garden's just about getting there (had to show pics as quite proud of the transformation!). Addition of sub-base (MOT type 1) below: Levelled, compacted, then sand laid level (and, again, compacted) on top of MOT1: Once that was done, laid weed-proof membrane on top: Grass went on top of the membrane (retained around the perimeter). 'Dressed' the grass with sharp/fine sand after that (when dry!). (Will finish adding plants when spring's properly here!)

Hi i am happy you like my little garden retreat, you are right it is nice to add your own touch to your garden and not to be to regimental, it gives you a great satisfaction when you sit back in your garden lounger and think i created that, it also works out a lot cheaper, just adding bits at a time, and if a plant is not working for you, you can dig it out and move it knowing that you have not paid someone a fortune to put them in, i am not saying professional help is not needed as i had to get someone in to do my flag stones but it was someone i knew so that worked out cheaper and my brother did the decking at both side of my garden, he is not a professional he just likes DIY don't tell him but i think he is pretty good at it lol.. it cost me the price of the wood and 2 cans of beer,( i was given a couple or quotes of £450 for a 10ft x 7ft deck and £399 for a 7ft x 6ft deck,) i did paint it big mistake on my part as with being south facing it just peeled off with the heat but is nearly all off now so i will just power wash it once a year and give it an oil treatment, when you get your garden done send us a pic i for one would love to see your project,

Hi there Melody, Painting the fences a charcoal colour will give the illusion that they are further away and that the garden is bigger. This is a tried and tested trick that works everytime in a small garden. In gardens that are also shady, picking plants with the right colour pallet is the trick that helps to Brighten in up with a dark background (which mqkes the garden look bigger). I definitely think that the current layout does not favour your garden at all as there is too much emphasys on the borders and not much going on in the centre (recipe to make it look smaller). Screens are really nice but place even more emphasys on the borders as it is. I would change the layout and relocate the lovely screens as features in the centre. I am a garden designer and could make a plan for you (that you could do in parts as and when you can) that would make your garden much more interesting and look bigger. It would also include planting selection that would aesthetically look perfect with it and that would also thrive for years to come (as I would match it to the unique conditions of your garden). You just have to be careful on application. You could leave the external row next to plants untreated and focus your more laborious technique on these stones.

You could try vinegar. Just try on a couple of spots whether it works.

Hi

there is a product from sika called mould buster which can be applied and left and should help remove the spots of mould on the paving
it is a low toxicity product, so should not cause any harm in drainage or to plants.

Sodium Hypochlorite. Works a treat. Dilute it in a Hozelock rose sprayer container and spray it over the pavers. Leave for 30 minutes or so and jet wash off. It didn't kill my flowers, that's all I can say.

Hi did you ever find a solution to the black spot, that didntdidn’t damage the grass and plants, i have exactly the same problem
