Design Dilemma Before & After Kitchens

Tiling issues help

Just put in a new kitchen and there is a gap between the wall and the worktop. When I tile there will still be this gap. Help please

Perhaps the wall is uneven and that’s why it’s showing up. When you fit the tiles won’t it cover the gap? Place it on the worktop to see.

What a beautiful house. So pleased you have embraced the age and style of the house rather than deciding to ‘modernise’ it as so many posts on this forum want to do to their homes. The door is a lovely colour - agree with you about using that instead of the white on the surrounding woodwork - I’d use it on the inside of the door too. Crest idea is smashing. I think all it is missing then is some softening up ... I would add some beautifully simple planted larger tubs either side of the porch - I think the box look a bit too restrained & out of proportion - I’d go for white flowers spilling over the edge and silver foliage. Maybe something with height - olive trees? Bay ? Maybe echo the planting in window boxes on the ground floor cills (obviously without the trees!) ? White/silver planting looks smart during the day, but just glows in the evening & in artificial light so ideal at the doorway. More colourful planting would compete with the door, keeping the palette restrained would, instead, complement it.

Have you tried turning your bed 90 degrees and placing under the sloping ceiling? Also, change your door hinges so the door opens towards the wall. I know this will block the light switch but it's a small price to pay to get more floor space that the door swing is currently eating up!

I’d take advice from an architect local to the property-they can also obtain pre-planning advice from the local council, I believe. If it’s critical to your buying decision, then it’s too important to rely on informal views and advice.

I need help with an issue with a chimney breast thats had a gas fire.

Today I've started stripping off the wallpaper from my living room in my new property. I've managed to get past the chimney breast, but I've hit a snag regarding the chimney breast as there used to be a gas fire installed and the right side of it is battened and boarded up, with the bottom part of it still loose as it contains the old gas lever for what was the gas fire. The boarding starts off straight and then becomes uneven leaving a 1/8 inch gap between the baton and the lower end. Does anyone have any idea of how to rectify this issue as I'm painting the living room in two separate colours with the chimney breast as a feature wall.

How big is the gap?

Would an upstand, usually about 18mm thick cover the gap, then tile on top of the upstand
