Awkward Bathroom

Hi, we've not got the largest family bathroom and wondering about the best way to organize the sanitaryware.

Either how the plans suggest, or what about the basin on the opposite wall or would that leave too little space between basin and toilet? Or what about where the shower is right across the bath - have seen this a lot on pinterest but don't know anyone that has it.

I suspect that there were originally two doors between the kitchen and bathroom. The interpretation of the regulations seems to have changed over time and the two door rule is no longer mandatory so it may be possible to take out the small square of dead space and to no longer have an L-shaped room. A bigger bathroom would obviously be easier to fit out. If you are set on having a separate shower there is enough room but you might well have to either move the toilet (quite possible but additional cost) or change the window size/position. I also think that there is room in there for your washing machine.

When considering your upper cabinetry, it certainly looks like you would get more cupboard space by going to the ceiling. Sometimes the concern about doing this in a small space is that it could be more enclosing and visually crowd and shrink the space. A thought would be to have to the ceiling cabinets but a little slimmer so they aren't so deep that they close in the bench area. Bench space is of a premium so maybe the upper cabinets could be made bespoke so that you could have an open shelf in the corner above the microwave, not square into the corner but angled to run across that corner, so you can lift the microwave off the bench. Keeping the bench clear could also be of benefit in your new kitchen, so hanging racks for utensils and spices that are close to the wall could be worth considering. Others have suggested moving the fridge out but hmmm, not a fan of how that would go living with a kitchen half in the living area. Certainly search small kitchens for some design ideas and tips, sometimes it's amazing how well a well thought out kitchen can work in a small space with all the neccessary elements.

How about sacrificing some space, turn the basin alcove into a cupboard, then put the basin opposite the toilet, next to the bath. You could even put a door to the new, smaller, space, to make it feel different. A big mirror on the wall, a plant or two on the window sill, and it’ll look and feel different. But if you can dispense with the boxed in pipe area that would be great.
