Extractor for Island Hob

Hello! We're starting an extension shortly and need to decide fairly quickly what sort of extraction we're going to have over the island induction hob. I'd love some advice on the efficiency and usability of downdraft extractors, particularly for oriental cooking.

Hi Susie, have a look at www.bora.com .. we do 4 systems that are very quiet, very easy cleaning, can be placed anywhere (i.e an island) , super easy to use, lots space for pans & most important very efficient!!! Any questions let me know.

Hi Susie, if you like oriental cooking, you probably want to cook on gas? I think one of those downdrafts that pop up from the island might be a good option. I have a downdraft (Dutch brand) and it works very well. My induction hob has power settings for when I use the wok. It's okay, but I think that a wok just works better on gas with the flame going round the wok. And I don't think you can use a downdraft with a gas flame, sucks the flame from under the pan. But the pop up ones you can use with gas as far as I know.

My gut feel is heat rises - so with a hood you get some extraction 'for free' before turning on the wind turbines? Having said that - I've no personal experience with integrated extractor hobs - perhaps they are quiet?

extraction comes under part F of building regs, so your architect should be detailing this in the plans for the extension. As i understand part F the important bit is Part F When inserting or removing an internal wall, care should be taken not to make ventilation worse. Any new kitchen, a toilet with no openable window; a bath/shower room or utility room should be provided with a mechanical extract fan. The type of room will determine how much ventilation is required. Part F says that where a kitchen previously had only a recirculating fan this can be retained/replaced if it is made no worse. However, I would always recommend fitting an extractor to deal with condensation. • Kitchen: 30l/s if over the hob and 60l/s if placed elsewhere so you could have an expelair type extractor on an external wall that will comply with regs at a minimum.

We had this exact issue. We opted for a pop up re-circulating extractor and a small external extractor on the wall above the cupboards. The pop up extractor doesn't do the job well and is noisy so we rarely use it. We rely on the small external extractor and just switch that on when we're cooking. We had our kitchen done over 3yrs ago so they may have improved the pop up extractors now.

Vented induction hob: is a circular or rectangular extractor better?

Hello We're renovating our kitchen and we're at the stage of looking at appliances. I've read lots of useful posts on this forum about what brand of vented induction hob might be better, but I have a specific question about the design of the vented fan in the middle. We're considering either a Bora x Pure or a Neff N90. Does anyone have a view on whether the round extraction fan in the Bora x Pure might be more or less efficient at extracting vapour than the rectangular shaped fan in the Neff N90. The Air throughput at min. level (m³/h) seems to be quite similar, but I can't help thinking that the rectangular fan will perform better than the circular fan, as it covers more surface area. All of our systems have the option for Induction as thats the big trend at the moment. However lots of people still want & require gas. BORA does two cooktop extractors (downdrafts) with the options of gas. You can even mix gas & induction.. see photo of our BORA Classic.
