Kitchen floor tiles removal/coverup.

Hi, I have rustic spanish tiles on my kitchen floor and would like to cover these up. Is it possible to lay floor boards over the top instead of, what would be the alternative.... a concrete screed?

hi all. please let me start by apologising for the messy state of the temporary kitchen photos I've attached. it's still a building site. arghhhhhhhhh. having an L shaped kitchen and island installed soon. my question is. the layout will be similar to the current temp layout in the pictures. back wall will be floor to celing units with American fridge freezer. other Wall will be worktop with floor and wall units. large 2.8m long Island that will bridge kitchen (tiled) and family room (wood) floors. I was planning to tile first but with the island how can you be sure that the tiles will be symmetrical around it? sure you could move the island a few inches one way or the other but there's no gaurentee that the walkway will look symmetrical. best to tile after to get joins and ground lines where they look best? also the builder put down t&g 22mm chipboard on joists in kitchen. will need to put some sort of cement board over to tile to but this will mean the finished floor height will be slightly higher than the rest of the house. any issues with this? thanks all

How practical are travertine tiles for kitchen/living area floor

Hello Lyn, I have travertine in my own kitchen at home, it's been installed for around 14 years now and I must say it requires more maintenance than a porcelain floor. It was sealed at the time of installation and has also been striped back and resealed a few years ago. I live in the countryside and I have dogs, so there are occasions when the floor gets muddy and it really doesn't show the dirt. At first I was really careful but I've become more relaxed now as I've realised that as time goes by It doesn't matter as the floor looks better as it gets older. If you want something that will look as perfect as the day it was installed , I would suggest that you don't go for travertine. If you don't mind scratches and it changing as it ages then Travertine is fine. Hope that helps? Karen

there are several DIY products out there specifically design to clean grout. Most are chlorine based and can be found in most tile shops or online. Oxygen peroxide is another common solution. You need to be careful as both methods can discolour your tiles (depending on tiles type and quality) and you should concentrate on the grout only, using an old toothbrush. However, always remember that cement based grout in porous and will inevitably get dirty again. Another DIY solution is to use grout pens, available online. Those pens are relatively inexpensive and simply colour over your grout. There are no permanent solutions to dirty grout I am afraid and regular maintenance is required. The only way to reduce grout staining is to use epoxy or urethane grout in the first place. Epoxy and urethane grouts are waterproof but a bit more difficult to install as DIY job but offer better performance than cement grout.

I can imagine you must be demoralised because you can’t afford what you were dreaming of but I have got to say I get excited about this kind of house, it’s amazing high ceilings and finding one at an end so the garden is not shaded is brilliant. I think you could have a beautiful space if you put bifold doors between the kitchen and the lean to, raise the floor in the lean to so it’s the same height as the kitchen and have the same flooring for a feeling of continuity. The bifolds satisfy building regs as you don’t need to rebuild the lean to, you have a dining space for all but the coldest days and when it is cold you just close the bifold doors.
