What flooring should I do?

Hello!
We are currently decorating our lounge... half the new fire place went in today so it’s waiting to dry (hence why it’s half done / not dressed).

We are still awaiting our new side board (where all the babies toys can go!), the paintings for the large wall and the lamp tables and the plants aren’t in the right places so ignore all that...

What I’d really appreciate your thoughts on is the floor... we are swaying towards amtico as we have baby / kids / dogs and we will likely take it through to the hall and boot room. What I have zero idea on is colour or pattern. Or do we just go grey carpet?

I’ve been totally winging it so far so be gentle if I made any rookie mistakes with the room so far ;-)

Thank you so much... we are ready to order something and get rid of this awful carpet but I’m soooo scared of getting it wrong. X

Lovely room. You’re doing well so far! I love a wooden floor, whether it is real wood or LVT or porcelain, but with a little one something warmer and softer under foot would be a good choice such as LVT. Something in a warmer shade maybe? Here’s a few examples of LVT. You can then put down a large rug to add even more cosiness.

My advice is to first have a think and be brutally honest about how you guys live. When we first got our house, we got a gorgeous cream carpet for our hall stairs and landing. If I’m absolutely honest with myself, we’re not the tidiest or best at taking shoes off etc, and we have kids and pets - it looked awful very quickly and we soon changed it.

I think a carpet could look good in your room, but likewise Amtico or other LVT could look amazing too and be a million times more practical!

Out of interest - have you checked out what is under the current carpet? We ended up ripping up our first cream carpet and sanded all the boards downstairs. It was cheaper than carpet and looks so much better!

Aww these are pretty amazing just as they are and I'd leave them as is. If you REALLY wanted to do something might it be possible to set them on hairpin legs (like these: http://www.theironmill.co.uk/online-shop/4583956081 ) and make 2 fab side tables?

wow stellahome, what a grand house and entrance! I'm intrigued! Do you have many original features left in the house? servant bells maybe? :) Post some pictures for us! I am very familiar with lassco, in fact I currently live 5 mins away from there, and pop in often, they have many wonderful items which really enhance an old house. Took a couple of more pictures today of the dresser, as even though it looks very worn, look at the dovetail joint details! They certainly don't make them like this anymore (unless you pay a hefty price for it!)

What flooring should I choose for kitchen/diner in this situation?

Most people have different flooring in the kitchen/diner when compared to other parts of the house (even in posh house magazines), I‘d use something completely different ie a tiled floor maybe in a natural stone so it compliments the wood or you coukd use a Karnden but laid in a herringbone pattern. Personally i think its better to be completely different rather than trying to tie it in and not getting it completely right. In my old house we had oak floor throughout then a granite in the kitchen/diner i never even noticed it. Good luck

We have a very similar phenomenon with our guttering/downpipes. After we had ours replaced (I’m still regretting getting rid of our iron main stench pipe - if that’s the term) I started hearing knocking, popping, banging noises coming from them. After quite a bit of head-scratching it turned out this is indeed caused by contracting/expanding the plastic pipes, in our case by using hot water. We‘re now kind of used to the noises this makes but it’s not great really.

Thank you Sonia so much for your suggestions - I love them all and that’s exactly where my head is at! I guess my concern was / is that all the furniture has dark legs and I’m not sure of the rules / dos and dont’s when it comes to mixing woods - would dark legged furniture look ok on warm oak floor? X

Thank you Sarah - you’re absolutely right. And that’s why I’m swaying towards a hard floor... we have dogs, cats and 3 kids so it’s going to get a lot of traffic. Sadly it’s concrete under the carpet otherwise polished boards would have been lovely! Really appreciate the help! X

Beautiful room so far. I would also suggest a wooden floor of some sort - probably a mid oak shade.. Have a look round and even bring some samples home to try if you can. Don't worry too much about having different woods as the floor needs to be something you like, being a large area. A nice grey rug with a touch of turquoise to match your armchair would be good but keep the pattern subtle. Once you get your sideboard for the children's toys it will look lovely. If this is the only living room, perhaps a tasteful small table and chairs for the children would be useful at the far end? Its always good to contain their stuff in one area. Alternatively, Ikea do some cute children's armchairs in a grey fabric that would match the style of your adult chair that would look amazing as well. The rug and cushions will add cosiness without clutter. Good luck:)

Hi Sarah, we put engineered oak flooring down and it looks beautiful but the reality with small children is lots of scratches and dents, so i'd be cautious on that aspect. I'd def avoid carpet with dogs, cats and 3 kids ;-) Amtico looks great! I like White Ash, Nordic Oak as a little more white/grey in colour which I think would look lovely with your living room decor.

Hi Sarah, I think rules are made to be broken! Looking at my living room I have an armchair and footstool with dark wood legs, two oak natural wood side tables and the sofa has light oak legs, so a real mishmash. They all sit on a Persian rug and that sits on rustic oak laminate. I think it’s the style of furniture or wood finish that is important, not necessarily the colour maybe? My room is very traditional so anything modern or Scandinavia will not look right, even though I love that look.

Sarah, forgot to say if you look at the second picture I shared for the Amtico Cornish Oak floor, the sofa has dark legs, as does the coffee table, so you can see it really works 😊

We had engineered wood in the last house and it did look lovely but I agree about the dents and scratches. I’ve ordered some samples of amtico and kardean so will see what it looks like!
