Reclaimed slabs for garden

Hi I’m doing my garden on a very tight budget. Heard of people finding reclaimed slabs or even cheaper slabs, everything I see is
based down south is there anywhere in Scotland, Glasgow that anyone can recommend
I fancy 900. X 600 horizontal from patio slabs . Patio slabs I think I might paint . Grass is not an option with 2 digging dogs

I can't suggest anyone in Scotland as I’m down south, but if you are on Facebook you can find local to you Recycle and Reuse Groups where people are giving stuff away, and you can ask for a specific item too. There is also an organisation called Freecycle that is nationwide where people give stuff away, it’s brilliant. Sometimes people give stuff away on Gumtree too, so worth a look.

I think it depends on your property and what goes best with the house. You will have more joints for weeds to come through and for pointing to deteriorate with cobbles, so that's a consideration. The cobbles are smaller and harder to walk on, whereas the sandstone gives larger flatter areas. Sandstone has it's own problems depending on which type you go for, and, there are quite a few. You can get honed sandstone, which is flatter than the non-honed, providing you with better joints. We have Indian Sandstone ( unhoned ), looks great but the pointing is a mare due to the uneven nature of the stone, but looking at the fossils in it and the different colours is great. Nothing will stop the algae though, so you will need to jet wash.................ours has been treated withe everything you can throw at it and it still has to be done at least twice a year. I don't think it's just us, as, our next door neighbour also has sandstone, a different type to us, but they jet wash as much as we do.

Hi, we are in a new build property (6 years old) and are only just getting round to the garden. We have a tiny patio that we're looking to extend to meet the path and also out a bit towards the back of the garden. The current slabs are of course now 6 years old. If I can track down the same slabs do you think we could just power wash the current ones and it would all look ok? Or do I need to rip up and replace the whole lot? Thanks!

I’m not sure it’s slate In those pictures, but, like you, I wanted a natural stone rustic finish for my fireplace, I used Indian Sandstone which comes in so many shades. The slabs are available from some garden centres and most builders merchants and are often used in the garden. They come in a rustic riven finish, or a smooth calibrated finish for a more modern look. Global Stone have loads and you can search their website for local stockists. I know you can get concrete dye but don't think it would work going that colour way. You could do it with masonry paint and once it's dry, seal it with a concrete sealer on the top which should help keep it more durable. We stained our top concrete patio (used to be a shed base!) in a charcoal dye with sealer mixed in. Lasts maybe a year or so depending on traffic. You could also get a motif pattern and mix it up ie do cream base with a darker pattern on it so when it fades it will look more vintage. Then seal it. Almost like a rug effect?
