Best colour to go with walnut fitted furniture

Hi everyone,

I was hoping for some inspiration.

I am about to paint my room. I am a single 40 year old man and my room is currently white walls all the way around.

I would like to have a change. I am thinking a darkish grey on the main wall (facing the fitted wardrobes) and then a very pale grey (almost white) the rest of the way around...leading up to the fitted wardobes. Does this sound ok? Anyone got any better ideas?

Also, what colour carpets would you go for with this scheme? The room is medium sized.

sounds like you have too much brown on the furniture and you have alot of contrast with the walls. Painting the walls a warm colour will help. But had you considered painting some of the furniture....how about painting the front of drawers a light neutral and leaving the top dark?

Oak doors and walnut furniture

We have designed and made many interiors with dark and light fitted and freestanding furniture and I would recommend considering the tones rather than the timber colour, as wood can be stained or tinted if required. If the oak doors and architrave, skirting etc are a light oak then a light european walnut will probably work better than an american black walnut. Similarly a dark oak door can work well with american black walnut furniture. I have found that a lot of clients worry about mixing timbers but it can work very well, its about getting the tones right and this also applies to the sheen levels. A recent interior we worked on had very highly lacquered dark walnut doors whilst the fitted walnut furniture had a satin sheen in a lighter walnut. If the wardrobes had been the same grain and tone as the doors and architrave it would have looked quite different, but better or worse will be an individual choice. My advice would be to choose the timber joinery and furniture tones carefully and get samples before you place any orders so that you can check the colour and tone by placing the samples next to each other in the room that they are gong to be used in. This is because the light level varies from room to room and at different times of the day and will effect the appearance.

I like the combo of the two styles it adds interest. Everything white works too, but I think i prefer the oak with the white. Just comes down to personal preference really. Neither way is right or wrong.

When choosing colours for a room, tend to stick to either warm tones or cool tones. They are tricky to mix.

Walnut has red (warm) tones whereas grey/blue tends to be cooler tones so might not merge as well together. when you start looking at a colour chart, start at the creams and reds and look for a greyish colour in those columns rather than picking a cold blue/grey.

if you feel brave and you think you're getting your eye in, you could try looking at green/grey because green is the opposite colour to red so also works.

I think a dark grey wall behind the bed will look good. Most photos I’ve seen of walnut bedroom furniture tend to have very pale or white walls. You can also improve the room by adding artwork such as a nice big print over the bed, white bedding with some cushions and a throw to jazz it up a bit (See picture below). I would also get rid of those vertical blinds (too officey) and hang curtains in a similar shade to your walls. A nice padded headboard will cosy things up too. It is a fine balance to ensure the room doesn’t look dull and grey, so ramp up the accessories. Do you know whether the room is south facing? Light can make or break a grey room.
